  1. If I can putt half as good as Cam Smith, I'd be winning tournaments week in week out at my club!
  2. Congrats on your new putter! Out of all the different putters I've tried with different materials used, I have to say the 303 Benocks definitely do feel the most refined. I do know they even have SUS316L as an upgrade too if you go for the custom orders. If I recall correctly though, the upcharge for the 316 was almost as expensive as another putter!! 🙂 I just picked up my second Benock thanks to the favorable JPY exchange rate at the moment.
  3. I think you may be right... but he has had many let downs on the final rounds... we'll have to see how he copes with the pressure. I kind of like Hovland's chances. He had a bogie free round today. Seems like he's firing on all cylinders now.
  4. I think the regrets I have are mostly on one off putters that were customized. 1. Odyssey Black Series #1 with custom Gold's Factory Aluminum face insert 2. An old Yamada Mallet with heel flow neck / customized with Smoke Copper Finish 3. Yamada IPT customized by Gold's Factory with Aluminum face insert / later refinished by Tom Slighter 4. Evnroll ER2 custom tour satin finish by labworx.
  5. Good to hear the Espade is working well for you, Stu-san! For me my game has been in a bit of a struggle especially around the greens and on the green. Been going back and forth my Benock blade and the original JDM Stroke Lab Odyssey 7 back from 2014. I really like them both but feel wise, I do like the Benock more. I wish Benock made a Odyssey 7 type head. Closest thing may be a Toulon but I just don't want to pay $500 for a Toulon/Odyssey. Also, I am finding that I putt better with heads that are 350g or less. Heavier heads feel ... well, too heavy to me and I just prefer a 350g or slightly lighter head at D7 to D9 swing weight.
  6. I think it's in the construction. The 9-GW are essentially one piece 1025 HD grain forged with a stainless steel weight on the back. 8 and longer heads are hollow construction with a maraging steel face. They really did a great job making it feel very nice compared to other multi material "Forged" irons. Hardly any clickiness at impact. I praise Mizuno for accomplishing that. However, the forgiveness that they brought to the head is essentially working against me in that they focused too much on reducing the distance gap on off-center hits which is not a bad thing at all.... but it seems that they dismissed the fact that when you hit the middle of the sweet spot, it just goes longer than expected. This kind of tech works well in woods where distance consistency is probably not the priority, but with the scoring clubs, it just doesn't work. This effect that I experienced I feel is is generally true with most "game improvement" type irons that uses tech to help you with your misses. Anyway, My Yammy 020 irons are built now and I have had a few range sessions with them.... Thy play similar to IDBLs but with just a hair more offset. Feel is exceptional and there is no surprise bomber distances off of any of the clubs. I can simply focus on putting a good swing and not worry about the ball going too far. 🙂 Was not an easy decision to let go of the 225s since I did like most everything about it other than the occasional surprise distance.
  7. After using the Mizuno Pro 225 irons for a couple of months, I was unable to come to terms with the occasional +10 to 15 yards with the 7 and 8 irons. The 7 iron distance varied from 150 to 170 yards on decent hits. 8 iron was 130 to 150 yards. A 20 yard variance in that distance range can be deadly and highly impactful on your score. For a moment, I thought getting extra yards with the irons could be beneficial... but it turns out consistency predictable distances totally outweighs the added distance. With that, I am saying farewell to the 225s ... and going back to my beat up IDBLs (my backups) until I get my next set re-shafted. I picked up a set of Yamaha 020 irons for cheap... but I need to get them re-shafted since there is no way I'll be able to play the stock DG S200s... 020s are not as clean looking as the IDBLs but it looks pretty good and looks playable. Will review on the 020 once I put them in play. Oh... shafts for the 020s are going to be Modus 120s this time, 115s were great ...but just a tad too much shaft for me.

  9. I don't think they had "TP" models for the R7 Forged irons. .... R9 Forged came in regular and TP versions. Regardless, the R7 Forged were the player's model irons in the R7 lineup. I actually prefer this R7 Forged over the R9 TP Forged. I still have an orphaned #5 iron I picked up years ago. 🙂 Not sure if they were Miura forged... they definitely do feel like they are Miura forged. The current P7MCs remind me very much of these R7 Forged irons as well as the TP forged from back then. Though they were really sought after at the time, they unfortunately do not hold much value these days in Japan and sets in good condition are getting harder to find. Your set look legit to me and they appear to be in great shape too! Great pickup!
  10. So I've been actually staying away from a true 3W until this one. I've used a 16.5 deg 4W most of last season and an adjustable 5W turned down to 17 deg before that. I thought I would like the head profile of the shallower Rogue ST Max more... but the Rogue ST LS sits so nicely and perfectly square at address and it is surprisingly very very forgiving. I did prefer the feel and sound at impact with the Epic Speed FW... Rogue ST is quieter and a bit mushy at impact... but performance wise very very capable. I'm hitting my driver 240 yards on average ... and just yesterday, I hit this 3W 240 yards!! ( not average ) 3W is still my nemesis of a club in my bag ... but I feel that there is potential for me to start getting more comfortable with this one.
  11. Not sure what it is about this shaft but it just works for me better than the rest. 60S in driver and 60X in the fairways.
  12. Most of last year I played the Tourstage GR with Project X LZ 5.5 shafts and then most recently went back to ID BLs with Modus 120 Stiff. At the start of '22, I started to look for a new set of irons. One that helps me regain a bit of distance and one that looks and feels good. I've looked at mostly the so called "player's distance" category like TM P770, Titleist T100S, Srixon ZX-5, Callaway Apex Pro etc... After a few test and fitting sessions, I ended up ordering a set of Mizuno Pro 225 with Modus 115 Stiffs. During the fitting sessions, I felt that this combo gave me the best balance of distance, feel and consistency. Fast forward 9 weeks of waiting ... yes ... 9 WEEKS!! I've had the chance to put my new irons in play for about 3 rounds now and bunch of range sessions, and I can confidently say that these iron/shaft combo are now my favorite!! I am still adjusting to the longer distances I get with each of the clubs... I mean, 30deg 7 iron is a full club stronger than what I am used to. But I am really enjoying the added forgiveness of the hollow forged chromoly heads. Feel is not exactly the same as a one piece forged but it is so much better than the competition in the Player's distance category. Offset is smaller and looks really good at address. BTW I only got a 7-GW set.. it covers 30 deg to 49 deg. Distance wise 160 yards to 110 yards. which is really all I need. I always thought Modus 120 Stiff felt one the best in forged heads, but it also felt a bit loose from a consistency perspective. 120 in X flex was a bit too much shaft for me. 105 and 125 was boardier and didn't feel as good as the 120 in Stiff. Enter the Tour 115.... Flight wise I think it mimics more the 105 and 125 family but the big surprise for me was the feel is actually really good. The loose and a bit wiggly feel that I felt with the 120 Stiff are pretty much gone with the 115 Stiff but they don't feel boardy either. I can still work the ball left and right but it seems to like straighter shot are easier compared to the 120. Overall very happy with the purchase. My bag doesn't look much of a JDM fan's bag anymore but it works well. 🙂 Nob's '22 WITB DR: Stealth Plus 9* / '13 Kurokage Proto TiNi 3W: Rogue St LS 15* / '13 Kurokage Proto TiNi 5W: Epic Speed 18* / '13 Kurokage Proto TiNi 4U: Mavrik Pro 23* / Diamond Speeder HB 5U: Apex Pro 26* / Lin-Q Hybrid 7i-GW: Mizuno Pro 225 / Modus Tour 115 Stiff SW: Taylormade Hi-Toe 56* / KBS PT: '16 JDM Stroke Lab #7

  14. Yes ... they were saying even though it is a blade/MB design, the weight distribution seemed to be more CB like (i.e. perimeter weighting) Nice pick up on those CBI-80 Ltd shafts. Still think they are the best feeling graphite iron shafts to this day. Though my back is hurting just looking at the "X Flex" letters. I have them in the Red Regular flex and are plenty stiff for me. 🙂
  15. Seems like Fourteen has been releasing a few blades this past year or so. TB5, TB7 and now the RM ... I like this RM the best out of the three. RM name comes from their wedge line up which stands for "Reverse Muscle" where the blade portion of the head gradually gets thicker towards the top line which suggesting a higher CG to make it easier to produce more back spin. It will be interesting to see the trajectory of this high CG head design combined with strong lofts. Shidaru TV did a nice review of these irons recently and they were pretty impressed with them.
  16. Product of all the agonizing personal trial and error of experiments!! 🙂
  17. Also ... I don't think you are getting enough launch angle with either one of these 4 irons anyway... Your descent angle of 28 deg is not going to stop your ball...my recommendation would be to ditch the long irons and go with Utes. my longest iron is now a 6 iron (30 deg) ... 4i & 5i have been replaced with hybrids so that the ball actually has a chance of stopping when landing on the green. My descent angle with the hybrids are about 50 deg. I also use the original Honma TW-U 4 driving iron in another set and that 4 iron goes as high as my hybrid with a Crazy STP 85 shaft in it so it plays more or less like a hybrid. I love this TW-U/STP combo!! The other day I shot a 5 hybrid (Cally Apex Pro) from 161 yards to the pin and the shot landed 4ft from the pin and pretty much stopped there... then I missed the birdie putt but that's another story 😞 My Apex Pro has an 85g UST LinQ Hybrid shaft which I really like. Oh and I am waiting on my next irons and the set is a 7-GW Mizuno Pro 225. The 7 iron is 30 deg loft .... which is enough to cover my iron distances.
  18. Spin is good as long it doesn't hurt your numbers. From these comparison, the 8001 is a better choice I think. For the other steel shafts you use, what flex are you using? Slower swing speed does not immediately equate to lighter shafts..but perhaps you might do better with a softer flex? Since 8001 only has a single flex and they have a huge inventory issue, since Modus 120 S plays very similar to K's 8001 just slightly heavier... I wonder if you'd fit well into a Modus 120 R ... compared to a Modus 120, 105 are slightly spin reducing ( if that is what you need... ) perhaps Modus 105 R may be another one you could try.... Also if your local shop has the Mizuno shaft optimizer tool, I highly recommend it. It won't include Shimada shafts as options but TT, KBS & Nippon are among the shafts in the dataset.
  19. I've used the 8001 about 5 years ago.... did like them except they were a bit too spinny for me back then. It might actually work better for my current swing speed... but I have been having a hard time sourcing a new set... the two online vendors I bought from previously are all sold out. CPM wise, Ks' 3001 - 105 (S flex) is about 8 cpm higher compared the K's 8001 (Uniflex) I do know that K's 8001 is a bit flexier compared to other typical stiff iron shafts but if they are working well for you, I'd stay with them. K's 3001 105 S may feel almost a full flex stiffer. I don't have experience playing with K's 3001 105, so I am not sure how they differ in trajectory and things but just thought I'd share what I know about their measured flex differences.
  20. I remember Ryo Ishikawa long time ago used to carry one in his bag to use at warm ups before a round... swing speed measurement was his way of measuring physical condition for that day which I think is also a legit way to use one ... different day, different swing (speed)
  21. I just find the shape of the Apex series of hybrids harder to align to the target, my 5H is staying in the bag though!! Distance wise it only goes the same as my 5 iron but the height I get with the trajectory is night and day.
  22. One of my all time fave Tourstage irons. GLWS!!
  23. This year's Rogue ST Pro has a head shape identical to the MAVRIK Pro. Probably my favorite head shape of all hybrids. Apex Pro's shape is not my favorite but its the only compact hybrid that comes in a 5H @ 26 deg loft.
