  1. RLL, I think the TM that Chris posted looks very good. Yeah, the PRGR are not real attractive, but then the stuff I read about it's playability was also not what I want in this set. Vega's arrive tomorrow. As excited as I have ever been for new set. If they work, irons are set. Wedges next.
  2. RLL, being an utter nerd and having time to doodle, I created a little weighted matrix to look at all these suggestions. Pseudo objectivity. Depending on my mood, each club won. Point îs, these are all great examples of classic heads. Just depends on taste preferences and fit.
  3. While a darkhorse came from way back in the pack - some used Vega cb's with right weight/flex mci from pinggolf at a great price- when Chris sells these r9's it will be difficult to not try them. But for now, I have this players cb slot filled. Now if the portended floods in so cal will hold off for a few weeks, I am about to indulge in a golf orgy. Play the game. Sub-76 or bust. This thread was fun to read. You guys really know a lot about great gear. I had zero knowledge about prgr or these tm's. It is tempting to try them all out. Oh, I forgot. My ho'ing days are ending. Ha. We'll see!
  4. I am totally jazzed! I will get back to LA from India Sat, by the time Thanksgiving is done, new sweet clubs.
  5. I already bought 'em. I was gonna buy one of the TM tp r9 forged Chris is going to refinish, but this was too good to pass up. The trick in selling/buying full clubs is do the shafts work. This is perfect weight, flex for me.
  6. Where o you get this kind of grinding done?
  7. Wow, those are something entirely different from what I see on ebay! Were there JDM versions, or were these refined by you? That's a club that fits the bill beautifully. I'm pretty shocked to tell you the truth. (edit) So I found one tsg blurb on these - that's the way the jdm heads were sold. Stunning difference in look from even the tour issue tp's. This set I would want, but those I saw on ebay left me totally flat.
  8. Ok, thx for the info. Will take my 'TM bites' glasses off and take a look at these with fresh eyes.
  9. I also think that the Honma's vn's are a classic in the making but no one has played them. I hit them at a local store in LA a few months ago and really liked them. I had very seriously considered a blended set with M/VN but decided that this last set of the trio should be all cb... This is the thing with me. A club sends me a very clear image of what is about to happen. With my 503's, I get the feel of 'hit it long.' With the Mac blades, I get a 'hit it precise' feel. I am 2 clubs longer/shorter between these two sets and it's not all loft. I actually hit the blades closer to my target than the 503s but the misses are worse. So the thing a great set of players CB's convey is 'get it close,' and that's what an iron is for. If today was decision day, it would be between TR500 and vn's. But I am going to chew on this a while. And once these are set, the next is the shaft - the heart of the club. The problem with all these great jdm heads is you can't test them with shafts. No solving that, I guess.
  10. Haha. So I am thinking prgr tr500 and then thinking, 'and the price on tsg for these just went up!" TM.... shocked to them in this list. Their recent approach (3-5 yrs) dropped them off my radar completely.
  11. How do the prgr look in the bag? Hate to admit it, but this matters to me. A club says something about me, it's kind of a self-expression. If these look ... right ... then I really like that they are under the radar. Sort of a private statement. I keep noticing how much love these get from people so I've been looking here and on ebay to see pics. How do you guys like their 'curb appeal?'
  12. Last year's Yam tour cb's. They had been refinished and somehow my love affair with this look died. I liked the shape, feel and performance pretty well. But I was never really excited to be playing them. I don't know much at all about PRGR. I don't think I have ever seen this brand in person.
  13. I am close to the end of my ho'ing days. I am really trying to zero in on classic examples of 3 types of irons that can last - GI, players CB and blades. For example, my Macgregor 1025M blades are complete icons in my eye, and the Epon 503's are close enough to icons in the GI category. (Although wide soles pretty much always turn me off). The last set missing is the players cavity. I just sold some Miuras and Yamahas that neither were strong enough. The best in my personal experience was some Mizuno MP59's. I have been thinking about Epon 302 and Honma tw727 vn. I don't care how new or old the club is, and I don't care if they are inexpensive or costly. This set will be the centerpiece of my irons. I want something that looks great, feels great and has moderate help on slight mis**ts. This crowd here has bought and sold enough players CBs over the years to stock a warehouse. Everyone of us has sold clubs that we regret. What are especially some players CB's you've had that really make the grade in your mind as 'classic' - the kind you'd actually choose if you had to live with it long term? Thx, Chuck
  14. I play some with a lady 6 indx who really likes her xxio stuff.
  15. I actually built myself a turntable based on a Lenco chassis. Put about $1200 into it, including arm and cartridge, and then build a phono pre amp. Stunning sound. Nothing touches a good table, but it's work to play, to keep records clean, etc. More often that I like to admit, I plug in the iphone and listen to Pandora. But there is a whole world of audiophiles and audiophile 'tables out there starting at modest prices and going up into 6 figures.
  16. Old dormant discussion, but I have to add one more thought. I have been fit several times for clubs. Truth is, the impact seems subtle is you aren't way off base to begin with. I'll 'swing to the club' so I just need to ensure the club inspires a good swing. This is more art than science for me. But with putters, fit is a big big deal. I can't just eyeball a putter and choose by 'looks good to my eye.' When I get a putter that really meshes with my stroke, score drops and stays dropped until something changes. Offset, toe hang, weight, loft, length, lie - can I get it square at address and return it to square is not a trivial thing for me. If the putter fits, I don't have to fight it. The result - this is the club that aesthetics mean the least to me. If I can make a bunch of 5-10 footers, she's a beaut. So the irony is, putting which is such a feel thing with so few real fundamentals that carry thru consistently for great putters - this is the club that science really helps me the most.
  17. I have been on the verge of buying this set. Just not sure how playable 5-6 are for me - probably need vn for these. But this TW series looks really good.
  18. Anyone get this black copper finish and played it? How's it looking?
  19. I assume this is 4-w. Right?
  20. Rll, just saw this post. Wow. That's pure art. I am thinking these will look even better as they wear in.
  21. I am thinking I will do that vs go to Tokyo. Oct-Nov. Just blew golf budget on irons, putter! But this is next on the list.
  22. Without revealing their secret sauce, what kind of data do they want?
  23. Oh damn you rll33. That really does it. I think I'll go 2x more to India this year. The next one will be quick so I can be back for #2 grandchild. But Nov trip thru Tokyo. If time gets too precious, I might just use their distance process. But that report right there nails the deal shut. Can anyone compare distance fitting vs on site in terms of outcome? Is there enough outcome difference to make it worthwhile? I know the process would be great but how much better is the fine tuning. (ha. It's like everything. That last 3% of benefit gets very expensive!)
  24. I have never found strengthening lofts to work - don't like to lose bounce. I play blades that are 2-4+ degrees weaker than modern clubs. I put 8 iron shaft in 7 iron, etc, tweaked to lie a little and when i have '8 iron distance' I pull the 7 - or 6. I hit a lot of greens this way. I think for me that's the key idea - it's not how far I hit an iron, but do I hit the green? But it is a different set of what's important.
  25. I think the honeycomb was lost in the refinish. I can't see anything different from a normal face....Nonetheless, these are simply great heads, at least imo. The price is so low to reflect the refinishing impact.
