It was quite evident at this years Japan Golf Fair that the muscle back was having a trendy revival. Japan is very fickle when it comes to trends and whats hot can come and go with the snap of a finger. While pretty much all Japanese brands design their golf clubs with the Japanese market in mind, this does not stop our hardcore overseas customers from nitpicking and wishing for a better muscle back every year. While Japan continues to pump design and technology into its irons for more ease of use more distance and more all around performance, it seems they have also decided to take a step back and bring back the blade the way it should be. And what exactly is the way a blade should be? According to many of the enthusiasts on TSG, clean, compact, boxier and less offset.

I took pictures of 5 different sets of blades all new for 2013. I would have included the Yamaha Tour Model which as you all know is a blade this year but its already sold out so there isn't so much reason to put it here. There are still other blades that are current but most of us have seen them before including the Romaro Pro Forged (in the slide above), the Epon AF-Tour, and the Yururi Flat Back Blade to name a few. Keep in mind I did not take these pictures with the original intention of putting them side by side for comparison as that would be difficult to do with all the different lighting in each booth and with all the pictures not being to scale. So when looking at the images below do not compare them for size. This is more for design and shape though the angles may not always be the same. I also apologize as in some cases I missed focused and did not know till I got home.

Honma TW717M

Fourteen FH1000

Maruman Conductor Pro-X

Srixon Z925

<a href="http://www.golftoimpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/srixon925.jpg"><img'>http://www.golftoimpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/srixon925.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22120" title="srixon925" alt="" src="http://www.golftoimpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/srixon925.jpg" /></a>

All 5 models are reasonably compact and have sharper faces with less offset. The Maruman appears to have the most offset with the Tourstage the least (though the Srixon may be close but I screwed up the focus on that one). Based on my personal tastes I really like the back muscle of the Fourteen, very clean and classic and minimal stampings. Best looking from up top and front on for me is the Tourstage X-Blade 909. Not only does the 909 have the straightest neck and that butter knife look, its toe has the best shape in my opinion. The thing about irons and any golf club for that matter is that when it comes to looks, its always very subjective and personal. One persons cup of tea is not always another's.

So which 2013 blade looks the best to you? Vote in the poll above!

It's a toss up between the Srixon and the TS 909. But I prefer the RomaRo to them all.

I really do love the Fourteen from the back but at address its a bit rounder than I would have thought it would look.

Fourteen and X Blade for me.... However would be nice if the top line for fourteen was a little thinner and the X Blade with a tad less offset. However having said that, non of the 2013 blades excite me.... Apart from Yamaha Tour of course but I was late on the trigger (as usual)

I like the Fourteen backside but the topline is kind of odd for a MB. All together the 909 wins for me.

the fourteen is definitely clean and that honma muscle just looks super meaty...but to even my own surprise i chose the 909 for it's overall appeal.

Honma looks different to me, meaty at the back and of course very compact.

909 for me. The rest either have too much offset, too thick a top line, or are too shiny. Too much offset in the Tourstage? I hardly see any. Angle maybe?

Address view is key to me so 909 here.

There is almost no offset in the Tourstage 909 and the 709MC and 709CB also have very little offset... the X-Blades are always good in this sense.

The Fourteens look so nice. It reminds me of a MacBook Pro with the apple logo. Just beautiful. Is it cast or forged?

Very small offset on the TS and got my vote. I love how the Srixon is shaped but way too shiny for me.

It doesn´t get much cleaner and nicer than the Fourteen, definitely get´s my vote. Second would be the Tourstage, all of their iron offerings have been pretty good.

A friend of mine just discovered a set of Z-101´s in his basement... they will be mine soon. ;)

The only thing that keeps me from getting the 909's right now, is that I'm expecting to see something coming from Kobayashi-san out of S-yard. Considering the BOLD wedge and T.388, I can only imagine what a blade coming from him could be; I'm just hoping its not like the Epon Personal, or at least maybe a melding of the 909 and Personal. Come on Tario and Chris, can you give us any hint if you guys know that a blade from S-Yard is on the horizon?

If Koba-San can create something similar to the epon personal's with less off set, I am definitely in!
