Cutting down shaft length?

Maverick

Recommended Posts

I currently use a 45" Firm flex shaft (Callaway Sys60). Now before everyone gives me their .02 on how crappy the shaft is, which I've heard..lol, I'm 5'9" and feel that it's a tad too long for me. What would you reccomend:

1. Just bear it and choke down?

2. Cut the shaft down 1" and add some lead tape?

THanks

Budas,

That would be correct. You can buy thicker "squares" of tape that weigh more - that may be an option. In all honesty, I would try the club after cutting it down before worrying about the tape. If you are choking down 1" now and hit the club well, the tape may not be neeeded.

Is the driver too long and/or too heavy?

I get confused here, so I will try to think out loud (since I am a hitter) - if you are a swinger and tend to hit it out to the right, then the shaft is too stiff, if you are hitting it left, then it may be too weak...for a hitter, this is exactly opposite, so you need to know your tendancy.

Cutting down a graphite shaft will generally make it a little stiffer. If you are a "go" for a cut down, then I would try it 1/2" at a time...easier to cut one down than add the length back in. If it get's a little too light, rather than keep adding lead tape, then get a good bud to put in a "tip weight" to bring the SW back up. Hope I helped and did not confuse the question!

I just got done shortening my driver down to a 44.5 inch length and have found the accuracy has gotten even better. It's a Cleveland L460 so I don't stray too far off the fairway but I decided to give it a shot just for fun. You might want to stick with making changes at 1/2 inch intervals.

I remember reading that shortening a shaft won't really make it stiffer if you are trimming it from the butt end. You are shortening the shaft but there's another characteristic that changes and it evens out. I think it was on Swingweight.com. I could be totally off base, though.

Edit: I'm 5'9" also and have felt that the 45" driver might have been a bit long. For the past two months I've choked down on the driver. I wanted to change the grip so while I was doing it I got out the Dremel and took a little off.

im 5'8" and play a 44" driver. it was 45, but i cut it down 1 inch based on the recomendation of the pro at the local shop here. it felt a little long as well and we went with an inch off and it feels fine.
