sonartec_guy
where to begin... I'm 6'1'', and the length from my shoulder to the base of my wrist is about 24". Ive been playing standard lenght/lie Z101's. my setup has always been an issue: the butt of the club was always too close to my body. As well, to be comfortable, my hands are basically holding the highest part of the grip; there is about a half an inch of left palm that is not on the club. I've lie boarded these irons and they seemed to be ok with the lenght as they are. right now, im a 2 handicap, #1 on my high school team, and am mid way through the season. ive been shooting pretty well, about even par each round. so, last thursday i was informed by my instructor that my clubs are too short, and i need about 0.5-1 inch of extra length, and about 1-2* of upright bend. after he told me this, i started to think about it and realized that i have had some pretty horrible miss hits, but ive also had some great solid hits. basically my question is will extending and bending my clubs really make THAT much of a difference?? if so, what are my options? kmak
Adding length will increase the swingweight of your irons. Try finding a range/pro shop that has demo irons in a variety of lengths and lies, pick the ones you want, see if you can notice a difference, spend a lot of time hitting balls before you make such a change to your irons. Buddy
Given your present situation, you probably do not want radical set up / equipment changes until your season is over. You seem to have adjusted well given your handicap and scoring...good hand-eye coordination. It sounds like you need longer clubs and probably a more upright lie; both changes will influence your swing plane, arc, trajectory and timing. Ultimamtely, you will play more consistantly, everything else being equal. Proper fitting is very important, especially at your level of play. Get with a knowledgeable instructor and club fitter and begin the process. It may take some time to adjust, but your game will be more solid / consistant. Good luck, Warren
NickBooras
Most guys your height that I fit tend to be about 0.5" over standard (38.5" 5 iron), but that is by no means set in stone. For every 0.5" in length you add to a club, it will make it play 1 more degree upright, and increase the swing weight by about 3 points. Make sure you extend the clubs then test your lie to see what you need - if you extend and bend, you could end up with poorly fit irons. Bottom line, though: don't fix what isn't broken, especially mid-season. Finish out your year with your clubs as they are, then tweak in the off season.
