zojo
Well, i've been having some difficulties with constantly hitting the ball with my middle irons. I make good contact with long irons and wedges and short irons, but it seems like the irons (5,6, and sometimes 7, mostly the 5 though) I just can't hit it anywhere except the toe. I'm not sure if its ball placement in my stance, but it feels like i'm standing upright during my downswing a little, which would probably cause this. Its very frustrating because I don't know any drills or stuff to work on it. I just spent about an hour hitting just my 5 iron, slowing down my swing and bringing it back up, standing closer, farther, reaching out, hands close, feet close, feet wide, and nothing is working. Any help would be appreciated, hopefully I can get some videos of my swing online by tomorrow.
benny
Sounds odd that it would be one club. Check your set make up i.e., lies, lengths, swing wieghts, flex/frequency. This will help determine if there is something that distinguishes the five iron from the rest of the set. I don't think ther are any drills that would focus specifically on one club, or range of clubs. One swing for all full shots throughout the bag. Things you might try: Alternate shots between clubs you strike well with the clubs you don't... Say 5 balls with your 4 iron followed by your 5 iron. Set up a swing station with a gate around your ball. You can do this with tees or clubs or broken shafts. Doing this with your clubs raises the bar on failure, you don't want to make broken shafts for the sake of this drill. Place the shafts tees etc... just far enough to swing your club head through and make center face contact. Unfortunately, I've been having the opposite problem, I've been having some heel hits (hosel rockets). I've been using a water bottle placed just outside my ball as a visual and feedback aid. It helps me keep the clubhead from extending beyond my target line. It also helps establish a good inside out path. Good luck and I hope this helps... zojo
well, i watched a few swings of ernie els and noticed he only uses a 1 plane swing, mine was more 2 plane and too over the top, so I switched to a one plane, keeping the shaft away from my head at the top, and i have had much better success with hitting the ball, plus I have a more solid foundation so i'm not falling over after my swing, so its fixed...for now
