Help with slowing down before impact?

I do not know how to explain this, but I think I slow down before impact. I used the smart swing ( do not know about its reliability or accuracy) and it read my swing speed was 106mph, however at impact my speed was only 96mph. I have suspected that I have been releasing early for a while, but this seems to confirm it. Can anyone suggest drills or methods that would correct this?

Thanks,

Sam

I have had a problem with releasing the club early for a long time (casting), and my coach recommended the following ways of getting rid of it.

1. If you tend to swing the club quickly try slowing your swing down, and instead of starting down with your hands at the top, turn through first and feel as if you are dragging the club behind you. This helps to maintain wrist flex and a slower swing with good rythm is more consistent that a quick swing with poor timing. I hit the ball just as far now as i used to with a much slower swing, as a result i am more accurate and consistent.

2. You will need a range session for this one but really try and maintain the angle of wrist set when starting down, almost feel sergio like. This is more of an excersise to get the feeling of what you are trying to achieve, rather than being mechanical. If you cast from the top this will feel very alien to you.

3. Finally what are your divots like? If they are shallow this indicates a shallow angle of attack. To steepen this i hit a lot of punchy type shots (at the range) , , using a fullish swing and with the ball back in my stance, working on getting the club to really descend steeply on the ball. This should help you to really get some feeling of squashing the ball against the turf and compressing it.

Hope this helps

I've had this happen to me before, and I have found myself a quick fix whenever this happens which usually takes no more than one range session. I take my regular setup, and I try to think of a quote from Tommy Armour get a firm grip, and wack the hell out of the ball. This always helps me when I start slowing down at impact.

Resist the natural urge to hit at the ball, and hit through it. You have to build trust in a full release, trust that oily swing is going to deliver the ball to your intended target. Work on L to L swings where the effort isn't to drive the ball as far as you can, but to feel what a fully released club/body is.
