DoubleAA
My cousin that I play with often is having driver issues and I wanted to help him out, he hits either a dead straight ball, slight fade (most often) or a power hook (SLIIIIICCCEEE). He has purchased 3 new drivers in the past 5 months and is always very pesimistic when playing golf because he has no confidence on the Tee, he is fine with his irons. I have tried to give him subtle hints and others things but no matter, he does the same thing. I told him to get used to it and work it into his game but he will have no part of it, he wants it either straight or drawn. Aids did not work (Inside Approach) so I told him to add lead tape to the heel of his driver. he went and added a whole strip and no he is snap hooking everything, he took it off and went right back to his previous ball flight. I was wanting to know, ho much lead tape should we be putting on the heel to help him correct slightly. His swing path is in good shape, I told him that he is losing it all just before impact, he cannot envision trying to backhand the target with his left hand and keep his knuckled pointing toward the ground to train his release. How much lead tape do we need to add? 1/4 strip, 1/2 strip, 3/4 strip???? He is driving me nuts, please help.

Sounds like a head case; a strip of lead tape shouldn't turn a slice into a snap hook: all it does is move the COG toward the heel, which causes center hits to have more draw "gear" effect (i.e., similar to hitting it off the toe). If its not just between the ears, a couple of other possibilities: Does he try to "hold his shoulders back"? That could get him "stuck", which leads to both right and left shots. Is he using the right shaft? What's in his irons and what has he had in the drivers? Hope others can be more help! Jeff
hornyjuan
When i have trouble with a super hook it's often that I'm overturning my hips. This causes your entire body to end upright and way left. Make sure his belt buckle is facing the target and don't overswing it. Hip turn should be quick and concise facing the target. That of course is for the power hook or block.
Dicksy
tell him to stop trying to hit the cover off the ball. Slowing it down usually rectifies this for me. Once he grooves this new swing he can start increasing club head. Nothing worse than not being able to get it off the tee...
Sgt_Slaughter
I would make sure his alignment is right. I realized during the season this year that my shoulders were open and my feet, hips and eyes were showing me that i was square. I then fixed it and now i'm hitting little soft fades, straight or sometimes a draw. Just make sure shoulders, hips and feet are aligned square.
