What's this about the Epon Type S?

Recommended Posts

I currently own MP32's that I've had for a couple of years. I have an opportunity to get a set of the Type S irons, though I won't have a chance to test them first. How does it compare with the MP 32's? Better? Not as good? How about feel?

Thanks for any input.

Welcome to the forum!

The MP-32's are wonderful irons. I think the Type-S will be something a little different for you but in a good way. They will most likely be comparable in feel as they are premium endo forged but they may be bigger slightly in size with a thicker sole (not big by any means but thicker than the 32's), think between your 32's and 23's. The topline is still relatively thin and looks aside best of all is the performance and feel for the Type S, forgiving and accurate. In my never ending testing of irons, I had a set for a while and regret letting them go. A few others here including Duffer19 actually plays a set as their gamers so they may be able to chime in more.

I have a 3 iron that is a Type-S. My other irons are blades, the TourStage X-blade 2's. I love the ultra-thin topline and solid feel I get from them. I went with the Type S in the 3 iron because I wanted to put a 3 iron back in the bag but wanted to incorporate a little more forgiveness at that club, similar to what a lot of touring pros are doing. The topline of the Type S isn't all that big and does not distract. The feel is great but not as solid of a feel as my blades. I would say that would be due to the design of the club, being a cavity back with an undercut. The sole is thicker as Gocchin has stated but nothing too drastic. I really like this Type S in a 3 iron and it complements my set very well. While I'm not ready to make a switch away from my blades this club works very well for what I intended it for. The great thing about the the Epons are they are Endo forged of course, but can also be ordered customized to your specs.

I've actually gone away from my Type J and CB-1006, I'm now playing the type S with nippon 1150tour S at 38" 5-iron. Ball flight and carry has increased 5-10 yards over the type J; the long irons are so easy to hit on a long high flight.

Don't feel as solid to hit as the type J but it's still a very satisfying contact - I don't think I'll be using anything else this season.

My clubhead speed is 110mph with driver, HCP 0.8
