Epon AF-201 3wd

Recommended Posts

I received a 15 deg AF-201 recently with the stock Mach Line FW75 shaft. The shaft actually doesn't suit me that well and is a bit heavy. The club sw @ D4.

Any suggestions for a slightly lighter shaft? High 60s to low 70s gram weight should work. I don't want to drop below D2 sw.

Thanks,

Droopy

What kind of trajectory are you looking for from this three wood. Do you want it to be a low bullet with lots of roll or something that gets it in the air higher and with a soft landing? Any bad shots like hooks or slices with FW's?

My Machline fw65 R on my TM V-Steel 3 and 5 wood is both D1 at 42.75" and 42.25" and they perform great. From my experience, Machline shaft, both driver and fw, tend to play stiffer than other J spec shafts of comarable flex designation. You really have to find out which 'Kg' flex would be best for you. My 5350 proto R flex is 242cpm on a Fourteen JC606 head at 45.5" and my Big Event Hyper Tour SR (custom by NGS for a golf shop in Tokyo) is 253 cpm on a Epon 460 at 45.5".

More background: I play a J-Spec Diamana D63 Whiteboard in an Epon 9.5 460 and I love it!

For the three wood, I'd like a medium to high trajectory with some roll. No bullets... My bad shot is a block to the right and/or weak over the top slice. I occasionally throw in a pull slice as well...

One thing for sure, having a white board on a 3 wood is a challenge. I have a white R on a CV Pro and it is a literally hit and miss proposition. It just does not launch high enough unlike the Machline.

I would highly recommend the Quattro Tech in your FW's, very smooth shaft, for some players it seems it's a much better FW shaft it seems than a driver shaft. That said, it's got a nice trajectory and is a performer. I think idrive and K2_2 has all their FW's shafted with QT's and love them.

That's right.... and I have them installed in the Epon Fw's as well. If you like the lighter shaft go with the 55. I found (for me) the 65 to be perfect for the 3 wood.

My Driver SS is 100-105 when I get loose :) I would suggest the S flex unless your tempo is extremely/exceptionally smooth.

another vote for the quattrotech. i have the 55 in both my 3wood and 5 wood. they simply rock. i tried the 65 and 75 briefly but found them to play stiffer than flex so moving down to the 55 has fit the bill nicely.

Thanks guys! I'm thinking that Quattrotech may be the way to go...

The GD W series, particularly the 50 and 60, is just as good a fw shaft as the QT and I doubt you would see a noticible difference. I do see a big difference between a 60 g vs 70 g shaft in FW. I have play the W, QT, PT but Machline iFW65 is still one of my favorites at half the cost.

The W-50 is indeed a good shaft, I've just been waiting far to long to try the QT for myself... (^-^)

i had the w60 in this same af201 and it felt dead as a pole, evryone of my friends that hit it felt the same way. after swapping it with the 55 qt its like the club turned alive. from zero to hero

C, I'm surprised it felt that way. The W series was once known as GD's smoothest shaft. It is an older one so perhaps time has caught up with it. (^_^)

Okay so I think I'm going to buy the GD QuattroTech 65 Stiff. The current Machline FW75 is actually 77 grams and the club swing weights at exactly D4. The QT 65 is 66 grams; what will it swing weight out to after installation? Does the following apply:

From truetemper.com:

"Basic swing-weight rules: every 2 grams added to head weight = 1 s/w; every 7 grams of shaft weight = 1 s/w; every 4 grams of grip weight = 1 s/w ; every 1/2" over length = 3 s/w. To increase swing-weight, either 1) lengthen the club, 2) add weight to the head, or 3) use a heavier shaft. To decrease swing-weight, either 1) shorten the club, 2) add weight to the butt end, or 3) use a lighter shaft."

According to this, my club will drop from D4 to about D2.5 or so...right?

Sounds about right... the grip you use will affect this a bit as well. If you have a good club maker, he should have no issues reaching your desired swingweight.

Good luck and let us know how it goes! (^_^)

Yup, my clubmaker is pretty dang good. I just ordered the shaft from TSG... will report after I've installed it.

I think you're making the right move. The QT is an excellent shaft. Very, very smooth and it just oozes quality. Even though I switched from the QT to the P9903x (and very happy w/ that by the way), I still believe in the QT very much and it would be one of the very first shafts I would reccommend to anyone. Please do report to us on how it goes.
