While I have not hit either but it is my impression that the TM XR is basically aim for the high handicapper in Japan and the Tour Burner TP is on the other side of the spectrum.

Duffer,

You are probably right. It seems like the exotic Taylormade stuff (and Callaway too) never seems to surface on the PGA tour.

I am a mid-handicapper with a 100+ ss, looking for a little length. The XR is 46 3/4" and I have always preferred longer, lighter clubs. I would probably extend it another inch too. But before I would spend that kind of money I would like to get some feedback from those that have either played it, or perhaps more of a knowledgeable club expert on this forum.

Another possibility might be the Callaway Legacy. In any case, hopefully there are some out there that have hit them.

While I havent demo the Legacy either, I would take the Legacy over XR any day.

The Legacy is definitely not a high handicapper club. Callaway Pros are playing it on tour in Asia. The XR you will not see on tour ever since it's a premium model geared for super forgiveness. When I first saw it in February at the golf show I was turned off by the looks. But I've gotten used to it. What has surprised me the most is how well it is selling. In the pro shop the XR is outselling the Legacy.... and the Legacy is very solid.

The XR is a super lightweight made to be straight driver.

Gocchin,

Thanks for the info. There is something appealing about that XR driver. A total weight of 286 grams (in Stiff flex) and 46 3/4 ", it seems like it should be among the longest drivers (in terms of distance) out there.

As for the Legacy, my suspicion is that the US will get a similar version next year, at a more affordable price. I think the new Hyper-X was based on last year's Hyper ERC, but that is just a guess.

My oldest son has hinted that he would like the Legacy (he is 17 and has been a Callaway fan since about age 8.) I am 53 and falling apart, so I think I might go the XR route.

If you have any other info or comparison test, I would appreciate it. I'm hoping that I get my stimulus check here before long.

Jeff the XR would definitely enable you to go easy on your swing cause as you noted it's super lightweight. I've posted the video preview up on the blog: http://www.inpakuto.com/ (the Legacy video is there too)

As for the Hyper X and Hyper ERC, they are not the same driver rather the Hyper X is just using the Hyperbolic face technology of the Hyper ERC. There are reasons the US versions are cheaper and usually its because in order to meet the price points certain cuts need to be made either in manufacturing or quality of materials used.

Spending that much money, why not go w/Epon and buy the best? EMB = XR, and AF101 =Legacy? I have all 3 of the 4, only the XR isn't in my collection. But I can say the EMB goes straight, and the AF101 is a huge cannon.

Gocchin,

I wasn't being critical of Japanese quality clubs. In fact, it appears that they are the "pioneers" for US technology. What is new in Japan this year, will probably be brought out, in some form or another, in the US next year.

And I appreciate your feedback too, (as well as teh others here.) I am leaning towards the XR in a 9.5 stiff, with XR 49 gram shaft at 46 3/4". Do you know if they are in stock yet?

Oh I know you weren't being critical. (^_^) I was just pointing that out in case people who didn't know read the thread. The biggest question people ask me is "why do YOU charge so much for a driver".

Yup they've been shipping since late April!
