Forged cavity irons - Epon vs Tourstage

I'm still in the long decision making process of buying a set of forged irons (since May 08!). I was fortunate to test the Tourstage CB 08 and Epon AF501 at a range while holidaying in Hong Kong.

To my dismay I find the Epon AF501 to have a harder feel compared to the TS CB 08.

The downside for me on the TS was those irons were only available in NS Pro 95 reg/Stiff which are too soft and light for me. I went for a clubfitting test and was told that I have a 91-93Mph SS on a 5 iron. Hence, I was recommended a DG S300 which I find it on the heavy side for me. I also have a high ball flight and would like to lower the trajactery.

I currently play with Tourstage Z101 R300 which is overdue for replacement.

I have sort of narrowed down to 3 irons and appreciate any suggestions:

1) TS CB 08. Will probably have to order a S200 shaft that I have not tested.

2) EPON AF301. Never hit but appears to be heavily recommended in this forum with either a NS Pro 1050/1150S. How are they compared to the TS CB 08?

3) Titleist AP2 with PX 5.5. Tried at a demo day.

Help! :tsg_smiley_crazy:

Talking players Cavity Backs here...

I had a set of TS CB 08's... I gave them to my son. IMO, the Epon 301's feel better. Every bit as forgiving.

The TS CB's have the NSPro 1150 shafts in them. My 301's have the Black Gold shafts.

IMO, Ball flight with the Epons and Black Golds is lower than most combo's.

Shafts are such a personal thing, I would suggest trying to hit as many different ones as possible. With your SS I would think a S flex would work better than a R flex.

If you are a good ball striker it's a no brainer, the 301's are the way to go.

I have read in other forums that the quality of the AP2's is not that good....

iDrive thanks.

BTW, how does the Black Gold play compared to a standard S300?

I find the S300 a bit heavy for my liking.

I'm a decent ball striker but would not qualify to play blades. I have a set of Mizuno MP100 with S300 and find it too difficult if I do not practice regularly. I lose a good 10yards on these beauties.

The BG shafts are heavy... which is my preference. They are very close in weight to the S300's. Seems most feedback has been that the S flex feels a bit stiffer than the S300's.

I had an interesting conversation with a TRUE Club Ho today... he mentioned that what he liked about graphite shafts with blades is that on mis hits it seemed like he was able to carry the yardage better than with steel shafts.

An excellent lighter steel shaft would be the NSPro 950's.

The Epon 301's are a cavity back... more forgiving than a blade but still compact and look similar to a blade at address.
