shoutout33
Hey people! Been a lurker at the shop and Blog for a good while and now I need some help. I love all of the reviews, pics, and information given about top of the line J-Spec clubs. However, I need help with deciding what golf ball(s) I'd like to use. Just like the clubs, the balls are expensive so I'd really like some feedback or reviews from some of the posters. I did stumble on some golf ball info. in the blog area, but haven't been able to find it again and I don't know how to search for it either. I'm definitely interested in Mizuno's stuff, but I'd really like to know what else is out there for med. to low handicap players. I'd also like to know, what balls they compare to on the US side. Also, what older golf balls (two years at the most...) were well received and used as well. Thanks for taking the time to read my post and I'll be looking for your replies. Frank
Hello, I am in Japan now, and I am interested in the ball market here. What would you like to know in particular?
shoutout33
Hi Frank! Thanks for the reply. I was interested in the Mizuno 801 series balls, but ended up getting a great deal on some of the new Callaway Tour i(s) balls. Couldn't pass it up. :)
gocchin
I guess I have probably used the most JDM balls of anyone: Titleist Original GranZ GranZ Premium Sri Sports XXIO XD XXIO Super XD XXIO DC Hi-Brid BB Soft Mizuno S201 D201 352S 322S 401 Cross Eight Bridgestone X-01 R4 X-01 S3 X-01 B+ X-01 G+ Original V10 New V10 Newing Brill Altus Newing Kasco Kira Soft Distance Kira Silicone Purple Kira Silicone Mild Callaway Hyper ERC Legacy Legacy Aero Taylormade Burner EX XR LDP PRGR TR Spin TR Distance Premium Red Distance Spec There are a lot of amazing balls out here and many are different in feel, peformance and spin. A lot depends on what you want from a ball. No US ball has similar designs to the Mizuno ball which uses the Cross ribbed core and really does act like a super ball. 7 or 8 out of 10 of the top long drivers in Japan actually use the Mizuno 352s even though it is a softer ball aimed at mid range swing speeds. I am currently gaming the Brill. Amazing all around ball. Wicked distance but still very good spin around the greens and very good feel off all clubs. Hey gocchin! ^__^ Sorry for taking a while for replying back to my post. LOL! Yeah, I see that you do have quite the collection there. Do you ever plan on doing reviews for the top golf balls in JP? If forgot that I was also interested in TR Spins as well. I know that I want a soft feeling ball with stopping power around the greens. Don't care for distance type balls too much, unless they do both very well. Like I said earlier, I got some of the new Callaway Tour i(s)'s based on what I'm looking for in a ball. So I think I'd probably like t TR Spins and 801's, but not 100% sure. That's why I'm asking if you ever plan to give (or translate) some of the manufactures informaion and or give your imput. Thanks again.
Frank
The V10 cant be beat, the new model ball has been reduced to 4800yen at many shops. Perfect all around ball. Not too far behind is the Altus Newing, great price and performance. For those who loose balls the Dunlop HI-BRID SOFT is great.. I am saving my Brills for better golf days
gocchin
I was okay with the V10, a nice all around ball that did lots of things well but not one thing outstanding. I played a case and moved on. I prefer their X-01 Balls... even though they are not meant to be distance balls compared to the V10 they gave me better distance and spin around the greens. The TR Spin is a very good ball but its just been replaced by the new TR Spin S9 which I have yet to try. I will though. I still keep a case or two of Hi-Brid BB Soft around as they are very comparable to the V10 with all around performance albeit 2 piece so half the price. coops1967
Blimey - i'd be interested in more details in all those balls, aswell. (Espceially the Tourstage/Bridgestone products... never been sure where the Newing etc fit in to their scheme of things - are they lighter weight, low compression or?) I'm playing and enjoying the X-01 G+ for a while now... used to love the U-Tri Tour way back when.... but found the B-330's very scuff prone. the X-01's are great ( the latest B330 in the US is the previous version of the Tourstage X-01's i think, so 4 piece.) A brief run-down of the Mizuno's would be interesting - never heard much positive info on the whole 'cross rib' design, who makes them for Mizuno? First of all, which V10 are you guys referring too? I see and orginal and new version on your list. Also, is it illegal to use JP golf balls in US competition? gocchin
First of all, which V10 are you guys referring too? I see and orginal and new version on your list. Also, is it illegal to use JP golf balls in US competition? All Japanese balls are of course USGA conforming and are used on the Japanese tour. I used both original and new version. The new V10 was better for distance than the original as they changed the dimples to wider web style dimples similar to the Brill. The Mizuno's are a pretty good ball but I found them to be as bit less durable than I would have liked. The 352s I liked a lot and as I have noted before, even though it is for swing speeds 105mph or less.. 7 our of 10 of Team Japan's long drivers use the 352s which must mean something. pabsquid
A playing partner gave me a brand new Mizuno 322 to try here at the Mission Hills Golf Course in China. And decided to put it into play for roughly 7 holes before it got lost in the particularly long rough at the Greg Norman course there (It's a pretty cool place with 12 courses in 1 location that spans two towns, just across the border from Hong Kong). Back to the ball.... I'd say that I didn't seem to feel much "super ball" type feedback as the ball felt harder than my Pro V1x's and around the green definitely not as confidence inspiring for low spinning type shots. Ball trajectory and flight were fairly similar, but with less spin, especially with the mid to long irons. Perhaps a better comparison to a Pro V1x would be the 4 piece 801 model, but 6 bucks a ball is a significant upgrade from $3.75. Durability seemed far better than the Pro V1x however, which is a definite plus - one strike puts noticeable groove marks on my pro V1x's. Would love to hear feedback on balls that top the Pro V1x in terms of distance while retaining feel and short game playability. Certainly the premium Japanese stuff doesn't hold back on the quality of the base materials so would be interested to see what stacks up to other four piece balls. (or the Penta, which I haven't tried yet either....)
gocchin
The 322 is the harder of the two 3 series balls and you would actually feel the super ball effect more with the softer 352s. The hardness of the 322s also adds to the durability.

The hardness of the 322s also adds to the durability. So the 352's are nice huh? Noticed that you have a clearence on them as well. Probably be the cheapest Mizuno to get next to the D201's. Notice that you've hit these as well. How do they feel to you? Oh yeah, I'm asking all of these questions but haven't said anything about me' :p Well, the only spec I can give you now, is that my club speed (based on what my local clubfitter said...) is in the high 90mph range. But as you've noticed from my posts, my concern is feel and playability around the greens. Hmm...gocchin, instead of me asking something everytime I post, could you please give me your opinons, on the best balls you'd recommend for spin, playability and a soft feel. Preferably in the price range you have for the D201's and 352's. Having older equipment doesn't bother me, as long as it works. :p Thanks for all the replies as well.
