Vegaman
I've been on about this here before..My Kyoei Vega MB PW is just great. I go to it at times when i really should be using something more lofted, it's small and powerful, has the perfect bounce for me, is accurate, feels soft I can manipulate shots with it, open it up etc etc. I have 3 rupas Wedges and they are ok, but nothing compared to my PW. Have few Vokeys..Same thing. I have an Epon coming from Spoon, that might be the thing! I even use my PW in bunkers unless I'm absolutely greeside with the flag really short. The Romaro W wedge looks very promising from the photos I must say.. I'd like a 52 and a 58 looking and playing like a blade PW but just with more loft. Why are are almost all wedges so bulky and big? I've been eyeing the Miuras, even held a couple of them but it's the same thing there, if I hold the Miura blade PW next to the Muira Wedge, the wedge has suddenly grown compared to the PW. Why is this? Am I the only one who ever got riled up about this? Wedges are for partial shots and finesse, shouldn't they be really small and compact compared to the irons that we use for full swings? is it a weight issue, that they need to be large because they need to be heavier? I think it's almost illogical that wedges almost always are bigger than the short irons. Edited April 10, 2012 by Vegaman
Spoon
Interesting read Christian! I never rally thought about it. I actually Like the look of the wedges and some more than others to be frank. I am actually the opposite I like the size of the wedges I play. Nice Face with lots of room to frame the ball and just that added surface area To inspire confidence. For me I like a very compact wedge yet have a tall face. The RC protos And maru wedges are like this. But you are on to something, about a year Ago I bought a epon af tour pw which is 48* and bent it to 50 to serve as my Gap. Some PGA pros have two pitching wedges one bent to a higher loft to serve As the gap, I forget who it was but he was a top 5 player. Others though on theopposite camp hate their bulbous pwedges and have swapped em All together with a 48wedge. You will notice the trend with wedges being offered in 46 and 48deg. Wasn't the case several years ago.
Vegaman
Yep, that's true Carlo, I have noticed many tour players only have irons up to 9-iron and then wedges for the rest. But I wouldn't say that the PW is bulbous and the wedges are slender, in my experience the average blade or players CB PW is neater and a bit smaller than the average wedge. At least these days, blade sets from a while ago had pretty large PWs. Now, with most blades and players CBs there is a jump in size when you go from PW to Gap and especially SW and LW. But like I wrote earlier, the Romaro W in the GTI blog looks really like it could be a natural progression from a blade set or a compact CB. Looking forward to checking out the Epon by the way.
