I'm Torn!

Hello everyone.

A little bit about me: I'm a 12 handicap and in pursuit of a fit for me JDM set of golf clubs.

I just bought a set of Epon 302s from EponFreak. 3-pw. After lots of research I purchased these clubs and I am going to a well known fitter in the US to get these heads fully set to me. I may need to get fit for the 502s in 3/4 iron but I know I can play these clubs and get a fully custom set of irons I will love.

My problem/question now is regarding drivers. I see so many great reviews for all these awesome JDM drivers and I have a few in mind that I would love but I'm torn because I really want a set of clubs (Driver) that is customized to my swing and stance and club head speed etc. But the problem is I have no way of hitting ANY of these drivers before I have to purchase them and I am by no means a rich man. This makes me wonder since most of the JDM drivers your choices are limited to loft and sometimes weight how will I know which one works for me?

I really like what the Ryoma D1 Vspec has to offer and all the great reviews really make me want it but how do I know it will be good for me? I would have Absolutely no idea which weight to select or even if 198g is different than 199g. It must be if the 1gram weight difference is offered!!

Will it be more beneficial for me to get my fitter to fit me with an R11S where ALL specs and shaft can be fit to MY swing on a launch monitor by a pro in person?

Help. I'm confused.

Cheers, Jeff

So is many of us Jeff.... unfortunately like most things, it's a trial and error and that's why picking up in BST would reduce the 'damage' lol

Good thing is those JDM drivers do fetch a much higher price as compare to USDM drivers but if you look at the threads here, you can see a lot of us are still 'trying' to see what's best for us and eventhou we do 'find' something that suite our swing, doubt this will ever end as there is always something behind the back of our mind that there is always something out there better..... damn marketing !

Probably... But it won't stop you from wondering what it would have been like had you gone JDM. ;)

I think you'll probably get a lot of similar answers my guess being the Ryoma, Yamaha, and Epon (non zero) getting a lot of nods for being long forgiving and having tremendous feel. I had a kamui pro kpx show up today that I really really like. Needs a stouter shaft but the performance is great. I tend to hook the ball and it is very anti left. Very understated impact sound as well.

Where do you live?...you'd be amazed how many JDM fitters are out there, just a matter of searching around a bit.

The one beauty of JDM vs US drivers is that for the most part, they hold their value, so for many of us it's been a bit of trial and error, which is part of the fun and not just about head choice and experimenting with that but also all the shaft choices out there. If it doesn't work out for you, just put it back on BST and you lose some, not a lot.

Ryoma definitely gets it's fair share of good press out there...for me, it simply did not work out. I have the view that it's a driver for slower less aggressive golfers and I just hit a bunch of duck hooks. Others here believe it to be the holy grail. On my end, I love my epon 151 and I have seen some great deals as of late on BST with some used Epons, many of which may be a couple years old, but still the real deal and will give you a lot of forgiveness and a lot of pleasure. In my view you simply cannot go wrong with epon as a primer to JDM drivers. Other great stuff with Yamaha, Kamui, and on and on.

Edit: Ed: just saw that you wrote almost exactly what I wrote! Great minds...

A lot of people will suggest Ryoma as it has probably had success with 90% of its users... and it definitely suits faster swingers... we have long drivers using the V-Spec and they swing over 135mph.

Ryoma has a huge sample source to get peer opinions on because we have simply sold so many, honestly more than any other driver we have ever carried. It outsells, Epon, Tourstage, Yamaha, Titleist and every other driver we carry.... COMBINED. That must speak for itself in some way. (^_^)

However, as with every club, its about finding the right fit for you. Head weight is not something you should be worrying about but more so whether or not the driver you are looking at suits your game and swing. And then probably the hardest part of all, finding the right shaft. Everyone knows I say this all the time, the shaft is probably the hardest fit and the most important. To quote myself "a great shaft can make an average head come to life, a crappy shaft can make an amazing driver head even crappier." Finding the right shaft for you will improve the chances of a driver performing the way it should.

And yes there will always be new clubs always new designs... some of the biggest golf ho's are here and that can be an advantage for those who are looking second hand.

i would only submit that it's not just a crappy shaft that can make an amazing head feel bad...but simiply the wrong shaft for you. i tried the graphite design ad-di7 in my kamui and i felt like i just lost my wallet with a grand in it. by all accounts, there's nothing crappy about that shaft but it simply didn't work for me. out of frustration i put in a cheapo (by jdm standards) ust/mamiy shaft and the kamui became the best feeling bomber i've ever played!

Be aware that some of the JDM drivers launch low even in 10.5. Some seem to like line drives with a lot of roll out,
