Staxxx
I am building my 303 set and am coming to them from the 503. I love the feel of the 303, easily one of the best irons I have hit, but the lofts are 2 degrees weaker than the 503 in the higher clubs (and one degree weaker in the lower clubs). I kind of enjoy the length I am getting from the 503s although often enough it takes me by surprise! I was planning to leave the 5 and 6 irons the same loft in the new set, but thought to deloft the 7, 8 and 9 by one degree. Hopefully this would result in somewhat of a compromise. Will I have a problem with the bounce designed for these irons by bending them and would that affect the playability if I marginally adjust these lofts? Could I even go two degrees with strengthening if desired? Thanks in advance for any opinions.
Vegaman
Well, strengthening lofts will decrease bounce at the same time. If you are a bit of a digger this could be a problem, especially in the shorter irons I guess. And if you play in soft conditions.
FyteOn
1 degree in a 5 iron is going to be 1-2 yards depending upon swingspeed. In a 7 iron it is going to be 1 yard. You may not want to mess with the bounce for the extra yard or couple yards. I love my 303s and one of the best parts is the bounce on the club, I find it to be perfect. But I tend to dig. Staxxx
Exactly my problem. I do dig and the course is often very soft. OK. Will keep the clubs as it then and just take a club more. Bah!! I can just see the glee on my playing partner's faces.....silly boys!
chuck4golf
I have never found strengthening lofts to work - don't like to lose bounce. I play blades that are 2-4+ degrees weaker than modern clubs. I put 8 iron shaft in 7 iron, etc, tweaked to lie a little and when i have '8 iron distance' I pull the 7 - or 6. I hit a lot of greens this way. I think for me that's the key idea - it's not how far I hit an iron, but do I hit the green? But it is a different set of what's important. Spoon
Was dabbling with the idea as well but better judgement has prevented me from doing So. They work so well. 1-2* May soothe the ego but trust me you may regret it especially When playing lush conditions. In the scoring clubs may not be a factor IMHO but keep them as is
Aston55
I personally don't think a degree or two will make that much of an impact considering the bounce. I play the Epon AF Tours and I bent some of the short irons a degree or two strong as I hit the ball very high. No problems with the turf for me. Plus these are all forged, so you can always easily bend them back if needed. I've also bent irons for several of my friends and they have not had any issues. I have a Loft and Lie so I tweak each iron till I get the desired flight and distance.
