myswinghateme
The Dave Pelz 1-day scoring game clinic is coming to my area (Cog Hill), and it costs $375 for a 3-hour session on wedge play and a 3-hour session on putting. If you have taken one of his clinics, is it worth the time and money? Thanks
Swunk
I think it really depends on your current skill level and what you hope to achieve from working with the Pelz clinic. Do you think 6 hours of "group" clinic time will make such a big difference in your game that 6 one hour "private" lessons with a local pro could acheive for probably a lot less than $375? Pelz's Short Game and Putting Bibles are absolutely great and are filled with tonnes of detailed info that would provide you with a firm foundation in all the fundamentals of the short game which would then enable you to judge whether you need to lay out all that cash for one of his 6 hour clinics. tsg4tch
I did it and wouldn't recommend it. As Swunk says, it is much more cost effective to get individual lessons from your local PGA professional. Everything in the course is in Pelz's books. When I took the course, the "sand" shots we worked on weren't even from a bunker. They had these plastic boards you placed on the ground, dropped a handful of sand on it, placed the ball on the sand and Voila!...no need for a bunker. Amazingly, everyone became expert bunker players with the plastic board guiding their wedge. Geez. Here is a link: http://www.shotsavers.com/store/merchant.m...ategory_Code=SG You learn your putter is too long, they happen to sell a device that illustrates this. Hint: get an old CD, put it on the ground reflective side up, put a golf ball in the center hole. Address the ball with your putter and you can see where your eyes are in your reflection in the CD(over the ball, inside the line, outside). Loosen your grip and slide your hands down the grip until your eyes are where you want them. Note where you hands are on the grip and just above that is the "correct" length for your putter. You learn that you need many devices, training aids to get better...they happen to sell them and will give you a bulk discount. Pelz wedges?...got 'em to sell. Books?...selling those, too. Don't get me wrong, there is some useful information, but I think you can better learn it from your teaching pro while getting one-on-one help. Just my opinion.:)
primo
I went to the clinic, don't go. It's a complete waste of time and even more of a waste of money. Everything they teach is in the books, on the dvd, on the golf channel. I truely felt robbed, they hardly spend any time with you one on one. My particular group, which they aplogized, was overbooked with like 30 people in it. So there was really no 1-1 time. Just like tsg4tch said, you learn how to hit a bunker shot out of a plastic arch, they teach you that your putter is too short, you spend some time chipping and pitching and then they show you a bunch of training aids. I did find the putter clips useful, and to justify the entire cost in my head, I paid a lot of money for a useful training aide. If you read the book any of his books, you will have gained as much useful knowlege as I did. Actually if you just browse through his book and just look at the pictures you can probably get just as much info. Save your money for that shiny new driver with all the new gadgets!.
hue
For short game check out Stan Utley. Pelz is a joke.
jeffy
I never went to a Pelz clinic, and since I've read his books, seen him on Golf Channel, etc., wouldn't go. I also have found the techniques he recommends (ball back, open stance for chipping; straight back, straight through on putting) not only unnatural to perform but inconsistent with the techniques of the great champions. There is a ton of good research in the Pelz's books: for example, he conducted an exhaustive test to determine whether or not leaving the pin in is a good idea on shots from the fringe (it is) and has good advice regarding strategy on where to land shots, set make-up, etc. But, for technique, Utley's methods are more natural and more consistent with what the best players actually do. Sadly, Stan doesn't have any books or manuals to refer back to and is becoming very difficult and expensive to book for lessons. I'm glad I got to see him last spring as I'm not sure I'll ever get to see him again! Jeff
