bigkidneys
I just had a TM R580 XD Tour 9.5* shafted with an untipped Fuji Tour Release 27.3 stiff. It plays at 45' and CPMs at 235 (w00t) I like to feel my shaft kick as I have somewhat of a smooth swing. However, My ball starts out straight and generally balloons high and to the right. I want to cut it down to 44.5 or possibly 44.25 and was wondering where should I trim from? The butt end or the tip end? I normally play my drivers around 250 cpms. I did have a cleveland launcher 400 shafted with a regular NV-65 that freqd at 235 but the launch pattern and dispersion was dead straight to a slight cut. Nothing this bad  Any help would be greatly appreciated. my ss is between 105-110. Thanks. jason
boyce89976
That shot pattern would indicate a tip that's too soft (it's lagging at impact). Cut from the tip to stiffen it up. Unless you have an extremely smooth build up of clubhead speed 235 cpms is too soft for a 105 mph swing.
bigkidneys
Thats what I needed. Now I just need to find out how much to tip and trim to get the CPMs up to 250.
boyce89976
235 to 250 is quite a jump (1 1/2 flex). You may not be able to get there with that shaft... depends on the shaft, but in my experience 1/4" of tip trim is about 2 cpm so you'd probably have to trim in the area of 1.5" - 1.75" to get to 250. bigkidneys
So, tip trim about 1.5 inches as it is currently untipped, and then put an extension of say 1 inch in the butt end to take the total driver length to 44.5 and hopefully have a cpm of around 250? I just can't understand why if you buy a stiff slex fuji and not tip trim as they recommend, how it will not play as a stiff? It seems to me regardless of what shaft, you will probably have to tip trim it in order to get it to play at true flex. Does this sound right or am I just an idiot  Jason
GolfXcellence
In my opinion, assuming you have a good shaft puller, I would not tip trim all that much at once. Frequency is a strange thing, and butt clamped frequency with some of the newer shafts such as the Tour Release may not be giving you the whole picture. If it were me I would tip trim it to length. Then try hitting it and see if that small amount of trimming had any effect on your left to right ball flight. Then if you feel it did, you can perform major surgery. Drivers with more volume and especially those with square to slightly open faces have a lot more to do with the right push than tip trimming will. In my totally humble opinion. Good luck Garry
bigkidneys
Thanks for the feedback. I was think of having it tip trimmed by.5 and having it cpmd to see where I am. I did not pay much for the shaft but would rather not have to dump $80 on a new one. My club guy is pretty old and slow as hell so I don't have much time to experiment. I actually have it for sale on BST at the moment to see what I can get. Thanks.
