  1. There are a few variables at play, seems to me. Speed and mass are the big ones - or acceleration (speed squared if I recall my physics). I know people say there is an optimal weight to maximize speed, which I assume to be true. I am thinking that at the same overall weight, shaft weight, head weight, swing weight, and swing speed at impact, that a ball hit on the sweet spot would have more initial speed if the head were more compact because there is more mass being delivered into the impact (decreasing its deflection), but perform worse on off-center hits because the MOI is lessened and more deflection of the clubhead occurs. I would think smaller heads for good ball strikers makes some sense, but I am just guessing. The other thing I wonder is, lets say a head and shaft is 300 grams overall. It could be shaft 80 and head 220 grams or shaft 40 and head 260 grams (theoretically, just for illustration points). Will these two be swung at the same speed? I don't know. But if so, I would assume better performance from the 40/260 because greater mass is located at the point of impact. This is really interesting to me.... as I contemplate a new driver, waiting in an airport....
  2. I think one of the things I like best about the Epon 503's I bought from someone is he had the swingweight at about D5. I really like this.
  3. Did you have to change shaft to be stiffer?
  4. This is a topic I have been thinking about .... mass vs speed. I was wondering -if the same mass is in a smaller head, it would seem like it would deflect less at impact. But not worth any loss of head speed, since that speed gets squared (f=mv**2).In your equation, v2 (ball speed) increases if you hold v1 (head speed) constant and increase head weight (M). So it's not that a lighter head = more distance but that if lighter head creates more head speed, then yes. I was thinking that overall weight light from light shaft but heavier head (if it doesn't screw up ss) would be optimal. This assumes hitting the ball on the sweet spot. Mis-hits would suffer. Meaning shorter shaft might be good. (Or not!)
  5. Ok, great, I will add xxio to the mix. Thanks. Since I have been chatting with Chris and told him about my swing and game, and he is suggesting the jbeam clubs and the Ravie/Touale shafts, I am hoping with a similar swing speed can tell me about their experience, too.
  6. I am 62, ss is in upper 80's. You guys with slower swing speed, what has worked for you in JDM driver? I am considering JBeam Glorious and 535 with Ravie or Touale shaft. Any experiences from people with similar ss would be appreciated.
  7. Kaumi Works is the main one. I know very little about JDM, mainly just from reading this site. I had assumed the other 'custom' heads mentioned were custom built, but even if choosing the head already built, the quandary is the same. I will pm you and take this off line. Thx, Chuck
  8. No, not irons. I am seeing driver heads that are built to custom specs. I had thought I read where the cog was customized, but now went back and see that it's only weight ports, which is pretty standard feature. But loft, face angle, lie, weight.
  9. I am trying to understand the process if you build a customized head and customized shaft, which sounds great. It seems you have to settle in on the head first then add the shaft accordingly. But if you're customizing a head, how do you zero in on its variables (loft, cog, even size) without knowing what the shaft is going in it. Maybe whether a specific head is 10.4 vs 10.6 degrees isn't very important, but obviously some design specs are huge factors. The point is, since you have to make one decision first between shaft and head, but each component impacts what is optimal in the other, well seems like getting caught in a loop that has no end. Hmmm. As I write this, I am thinking the customizing of a head or a shaft mainly impacts things on the margin. So, perhaps customizing the head (or both) isn't worth the trouble. Get a fundamentally correct head for your swing and needs, then tweak the shaft to optimize it. That sounds reasonable. I don't know about you guys, but to me this is really fun stuff. In the end, hardly anyone I play with will even know or notice, and it's not going to jump me into the state amateur finals or even drop my score much. My current driver is already pretty damn good. It's just a personal thing. Golf is a deep love for me. I have played for 50 years, and frankly am playing the best of my life. My swing is getting more solid. I'm not as long as I was but who can fight time? So I play from 6100 instead of 6600 yards. But having elegant equipment is a personal thing, resonant with the love and pleasure of playing. Chuck
  10. Ok, that's helpful. I was thinking, $130k and my wife would seriously tie my cajones in a knot and feed them to the fish. But a couple of grand for a totally custom driver/shaft is doable. Craig, I really look forward to reading about the process of how this worked.
  11. Haha, I just found the thread where seven dreamers custom shaft is 130K USD. I figured it would be pricey, but that's too rich for even a committed addict like me.
  12. As I try to educate myself on the JDM driver market (and have my eyes opened by the people who post on this forum. I thought I was a gear freak, but now I am a novice!) I saw a post by Craig who had a shaft custom built for his swing. Plus there are a few companies that build heads to exact specs for you. So, now my mind kind of boggles and I am totally intrigued by the idea. But even with my advanced understanding (relative to the general golfing public - I have a masters in golf equipment and fit to the swing, but a lot of you guys have PhD's and beyond), I would not have a clue how to think about this systematically, except to hook up to a launch monitor. But how would you experiment with custom dimensions for a shaft? So how do you that have bought custom spec'd heads (and shafts!) do this? How'd you decide the exact loft, weight distribution, etc? Through a fitting? From knowledge of your swing? Ouija Board? But I completely buy into the idea of this level of customized and pretty much think this is what I want to do. Why the hell not, if you can approach it intelligently. I am just not sure how one would do this, other than go to Japan where the inventory and fitting expertise resides. Which I can do since I travel to Asia (India) a lot. Any insight would be really appreciated. Thanks, Chuck
  13. You had a shaft built to your swing specs?! Wow, I never imagined this possible. Never even heard this for the pros. With this capacity, plus the ability to build a head to your specs, with all those variables, you'd need a supercomputer and NASA software to crunch the numbers. But I am totally intrigued. Where did you get this done? What's the process?
  14. Has anyone played Epon 460 zr? If so, how does it play? Forgiveness? Launch angle, etc?
  15. It's clearly a group of passionate golfers and equipment lovers posting here. How did you choose you driver? Word of mouth, or...? Can you mention these few fitters in greater LA area, or is that inappropriate for the site host? (ps how do you embed the quote when replying to someone? I thought the 'quote' button would do it, but doesn't seem to).
  16. Graphite Design AD 75 R. I bought this set (barely) used.
  17. Thanks. I happen to be in LA too. I got steered into EPON by a fitter in san diego. Is there anyone in LA who carries JDM? Any fitters - be great to see lunch monitor numbers, but I am sure this is very limited, especially for drivers.
  18. I just bought Epon 503 irons and they are just great. Makes me now think about JDM drivers, but this I have real limited understanding of the market and brands. Right now I play a 9* Wishon 919thi with 44.5" shaft which is great but it's a pretty high ball hitting driver. It's very forgiving and has a great feel/sound at impact. I am not an adjustable head guy. I have a mid -high 80's ss, and play to a 7 but from shorter tees (6000), so I make decent contact. I think a more piercing ball flight and rollout would end up a little longer, but in the rough more often, which I am willing to take as a tradeoff. Any thoughts about what to look at and why would be most appreciated.
