lkvee
I would like to re-grip some older clubs floating around my place, but there's no room for something like a shop bench or even a Black and Decker Workmate. Subsequently, there's no vise so even if I had a shaft clamp, I don't think I can use it well. I speculate I have a sharp blade that will be able to remove the old grip. I don't think I need a hook blade, since most of these clubs are steel-shafted. How critical is complete removal of the old layer(s) of tape? I'm thinking I may not be able to remove the old tape completely. Since space is a little cramped, I'm planning to use water-activated tape, since fumes from using solvents won't ventilate quickly enough. I'm trying to figure out if there are creative ways I can fulfill the functions of a shaft clamp and vise by using other things typically found around the house (or namely a city apartment). I'll probably spring for the $2 from GS for the rubber clamp, but I haven't shopped for a vise at all. Any other thoughts? Thanks for reading. (I may x-post to rsg at a later date and have x-posted to one other board already).
+TourSpecGolfer
Just get an exacto Knife cut the old grip off, peel the tape off with your fingers, then apply the new tape and stick a wooden tee into the grips tiny butt hole, pour gas into the grip and pour some on the shaft w/ tape. Line it up before the gas drys let it rest for an hour and your good to go. Did I forget anything guys?
lohrm1
Don't light any matches while you're doing this!!!! :-D I'd use some Golfsmith (or equal) solvent, not gas...Water soluable tape might be your best bet, although I've never used it. Just make sure you use enough water or solvent to slip the grip on easily and you should be fine.
ashryan8888
I have yet to use a vise for regripping. I use a exacto knife to cut off the grip and remove the old tape by hand or scrap it off with the knife if it's really old tape. I put the new grip tape on. I use the odorless grip solvent from Golfsmith usually do over the sink or trash can. Once you put the grip on, there is still time to line up the grip. TeeBonZ
MO is the water activated tape is garbage. I tried it on a few clubs and hated it. Not only does the grip go on much harder due to the tackiness of it, but removing it from a club is a major pain in the ass. Once it's on your club that s**t just does not want to come off very easily. I would recommend the standard grip tape and either grip solvent or I just use mineral spirit. I see no real need for a vice unless you are doing alot of regripping. Good luck.
