TMJUNKIE
What type sole grind ( width, bounce, camber, leading edge, etc.) does someone who trapps the ball off the turf need. My home course has really thick deep fairway grass and long rough in the summer. The only problem is in the winter its hard as hell because they don't overseed it. I guess I need sort of an all around grind. Any help would be appreciated I'm kind of lost on the whole custom grind thing.
Buddy
I have similar course conditions due to the Tifton 419 Bermuda fairways. My experience is you need a rounded leading edge, moderate camber and bounce with up to a mid width sole; you do not want a sharpe leading edge to dig. As an example, I had a set of Titleist 680's which were perfect, despite their narrow sole. Due to the thin fairways in the off season, you do need a compromise and a more narrow sole helps. If you intend to order custom irons, the company should be able to incorporate the necessary grind specs after you explain your course /swing particulars. Otherwise, most retail sets are designed to accommodate a variety of turf conditions and are a reasonable compromise versus the extra cost of a specialized grind. Good luck, Warren
