ok, i use a taylormade rac 58*, 12* bounce wedge out of bunkers. now the two courses i mainly play the bunkers r the same, mostly, the one course is in the process of changin their sand to the white ohio sand traps. its soft sand. now the other type of sand, isnt really sand, its like dirt and its hard and compact. not much of it in the bunkers. so ur club hits the bottom of the bunker. now, i struggle mostly out of the white sand traps. only greenside bunker shots. not fairwa or like 50 yard bunker shots. but from these traps, i play with an open 58* wedge, an open stance, and i swing along my target line wit the ball, not my feet. could that y im hitting them fat and barely getting them out. any advice helps. i dont want to just go in and just get them out, i want to eb able to go in and think of getting them close. any tips of trying somethng new or different to help me

Hard to say without seeing you hit. Everything sounds good. You have enough bounce on the wedge to get out of the soft sand. You might have to hit it harder to get the splash effect you're looking for. I play all kinds of sand with my lob wedge that has only 4 degrees of bounce, but I lay the thing wide open and I'm fine.

Think you should have another couple of balls in your pocket the next time you're in one of these traps and esxperiment a bit.

Be fearless. I too had this problem, but I don't worry anymore. Now, I use a 60* and I don't open the face. I just take a full swing and hit 1 1/2 to 2 inches behind the ball. It come out with alot of spin, and I've gotten up and down 9 out of the 12 times I've tried this new technique

I think you need to play a more powerful explosive shot (not forgetting to follow right through) takes the guess work out instead of trying little half to quarter power swings. Go deep and toss all the sand out of the trap. For tight pin positions take more sand but with power or cut more across the target line.

the key to getting height is a full swing and high hands with wrist.

You'll never leave a ball in the bunker again.

It seems like an odd technique, but I open the face more in the hard-packed sand then in the soft stuff. Bunker play is a strength of mine, partly because i practice on the course bunkers alot. Next time you go golfing, definately throw down a few balls and practice out of the bunker on any hole (if you can). The sand in the practice bunkers isn't always he same as the course. Also, to improve your bunker play try practicing shots from tight lies in the bunker. My favourite is down-hill and plugged.

just a tip, i find to help me catching bunker shots fat....i flex my knees slightly more than normal and really get into position...then i drop my hands so that they are very low......by doing this you will get the bounce of the club truely working in your favour! this should help you make better contact and hit great shots! easy does it lol!

soft powerdery sand is the easier of the 2. it just requires confidence and a much harder swing. for green side traps i always make around a 70% swing using different amounts of sand contact to alter the length.

I'm a 10 handicap, but I had been having a really hard time with bunkers. One of my friends told me about this method called the "bunker blast" that he saw on the golf channel. He's a pretty average to below average player, but i noticed he never had trouble getting out of the sand. He told me about the bunker blast. I tried it. and it's been about 10 rounds. Haven't had a hard time getting out of a bunker since. Line up like a normal sand shot (open face, open stance) but line up like you're going to hit it with the hosel of the club. Then swing at it and actually try to hit (behind the ball of course) with the hosel. Easy out every time. I swear by it.

One thing that many people forget to do when their in the sand is either one of two of these things, or even both. They don't grip down as they bury their feet for traction and they don't have the ball up a bit in their ball position. These two things are key to hitting good bunker shots. And another thing that's underrated is confidence. Like any shot, if your not feeling good going into it, your never gonna hit it well.

The Sand I deal with most is the greenside hardpan variety. Isn't it true that using a SW in these is just about impossible because of the bounce? I definitely struggle with this, if anyone has advice.
