Silencing a Taylor Made r5 Dual MAX

Hi all,

Just wanted to run this one by everyone real quick. I have a Taylor Made R5 Dual "D" MAX driver that I have converted into a removable weight style "TP" version. The other day when I went to the range to hit it, the noise of the ball strike nearly made me deaf! It was soo loud it seriously hurt my ears as it was so high pitched. I read on other forums to put some rubber washers around the threads on the weights and that would deaden the sound some, but didn't know if anyone else had done anything to quiet the head down some.

My friend has the R7 MAX also and his is also extremely high pitched like mine. Is this something that the MAX heads shared in common because the retail heads aren't this loud?

The max heads are the illegal heads right? therefore they have a higher COR meaning they rebound. with all rebound heads and Hihg COR heads the sound is deafening!

You can have the sound dulled down or muted as some would say. Your best bet is to give Joe Kwok a ring or send him an email and he will talk you through the process. I remember him turning high cor drivers into muted a few years back, so im sure he would be happy to help!

Yeah, the MAX means they have a higher COR value (around .860 I think). I will have to get up with him or maybe he'll read this thread and respond.

You might want to try heating the head to about 125-140* then thru one of rthe weight ports install Head Tack (rattle Remover) while head is still warm coat the entire head this should deaden the soun conciderably.

The Japanese TM M.A.X faces are made of SP700 unlike the U.S versions, They needed to do this to make the face thin and increase the C.O.R. I would suggest sending your current one to Joe Kwok who can foam or dampen the sound in a variety of different ways.

Or you could buy a new driver :tsg_smilie_money3:

Yeah, I'm not trying to completely silence it. I prefer a metallic sound to my drivers. I just want to deaden it slightly so that it doesn't give me ear damage when I'm out beating balls. Also it tends to draw some attention from other driving range patrons because of the extreme high pitch. I'm wondering if some cotton balls inside the head will help silence it down some. If I don't like it I could always take the cotton back out.

That could be messy! and if you only want to silence it slightly it may be a tedious job for the clubmaker to get it to your exact level of Metallicy sound lol.

I say sell her on ebay and buy a new japan import driver, you will get much more pleasure from this than spending $$$ on the silencing procedure! Many of the japan imports ie tourstage x drive and the srixon dont have the loud loud sound, they have more of a solid thwack at impact, that lets provides lots of feedback yet allows your ears to function as normal!

The biggest sound are coming from the crown and sole of the club.

A few ways you can mute them:

1. Rubber band on all screws or rubber foam might work to.

2. Rat glue the crown, sole and maybe the face area and try to spread them by heating it slightly to liquify the glue to spread nice and thin.

3. Foam the head.

Good Luck!

Just curious, but what do you mean exactly about rubber bands on all the screws? I have placed rubber washers under the weights where they screw in. Is that what you mean?

The lighter weight screws have an empty space between the thread and the top part. Fill and wrap that up w/ Rubber band. That will act like a sound absorber.

Is there a "simple" way to help quiet something like the Callaway ERC HOT which doesn't have weight ports??

I wonder if attaching a strip of rubber to the outside of the head, kinda like adding a strip of lead tape, would bring the noise down some. It wouldn't be the prettiest solution, but if you put it somewhere it wasn't too visible at address it may help.

Other than that, the only thing I know to do is to either stuff it with some cotton or add some rat glue type material to the inside of the head to quite the sound. Joe would know the most solutions. I know Golfsmith sells some rattle stop glue that you can add that would quiet it down.
