plus1
This is not a full blown review as i have not played the irons sufficiently to do that yet, however i can give my initial thoughts and opinions on them. The iron i compre every new set to is my all time favourite set -> Gauge Design Studio Handmades. Looks In terms of looks the epons are imo very traditional, with a nice mid-thin topline, nice face width and depth, ie they are not too chunky and definitely not intimidating at addressl. From the back view they are a beautiful chrome/stin chrome and they do daw attention when outside the local pro shop.....so beware :tsg_smilie_whistle: However when i Compared them to the gauge handmades i have to give to give the gauge the heads up to be honest. I just love the handmades longer face, with a block topline. To ME this inspires confidence when i stand over the ball, which of course is very very important. Alo from the Back view the gauge are a lot more busy, ie they have the buldge muscle in the cavity, as well as the millings inside the cavity. which i think is very very stylish! Feel In terms of Feel the Epons theyare so crisp, they are not they sofest forging i have ever hit, but that is not a bad thing. They have a firm positive strke that is buttery when centre hit. I have the Nippon 1150 stiff in these and the combination of the silky smooth slightly lighter shaft and the crisp forgings of endo really do leaver a tingle in your hands. When compared with the gauge they are not as soft, howvever i actually like that, as sometimes the gauge feel slightly too soft, and i had wished i got more of a strike or hit out of them! especially with the punch shots........i found the gauge hard to hit knock downs where as with the epons there proves to be no problem! In this department i have to give the heads up to the Epons - as i have hit a few shots that have left me astonnishing! Performance / Forgiveness The Epons are pure performance clubs, i think that if you are swinging the club well and need to really work the ball these will be the ticket to success. i found high shots, punch shots, draws and fades not a bother with this set, ranging from the pw to 3 iron! However the forgiveness of these is yet to be proved. so far i have found that heel misses are much preferrable to toe side misses. The heel miss does not seem to loss much distance nor strike, however when struck out of the toe i really feel the shot suffers. In comparison to the Gauge, the Epon Type J are much easier to work high and Low, not difference in the ability to draw and fade and the Gauge are in my opinion More forgiving. The reason i say this is because i finf the gauge to be very friendly, no matter where they are struck out of - and my miss hit being from the toe side, of course i will struggle at times with the type J. Distance In terms of distance i really do not notice any difference on calm conditions. THey bought seem to play to a standard 8 iron 155 yards carry. However into the wind is another matter, the epon definitely get the edge here. due to the greater workability of the type J and the ease of hitting low punch shots i found that the wind did not effect them as much as the higher hitting Gauge. Im sorry for such a brief overview of the set - but this is all i could come up with at the minute.....for me both sets are at the very top end quality of ALL the many many sets i have had. Both are unique and have their own benefits. I would have to say it will be a struggle deciding which set to play on a week in week out basis, however im having fun choosing. :tsg_smilie_cool: Edited September 12, 2006 by plus1
alpha_pro
plus1, hey you have the x's and the j's? what makes you play the x's (listed in witb) over the j's? is it just the forgiveness?
plus1
i actually have no irons in the bag at the minute......if you look at my WITB you will see that i have listed type x vs Miura 1006 vs Gauge Handmades, as this is the next comparison i am going to do. i have the epon type x coming in any day now, and cant wait to see them. I am currently a low single figure handicapper, and to be honest could player any players cb or blade. However as i stated above, i actually do like the look of a slightly chunkier iron, as it fills me with more confidence and on a day when i am swinger bad - an off day, it will make the difference of shooting 80 and 75/76. hence why i like the more forgiving and blocky thicker topline of the gauge handmades. I loved the feel of the epons soooo much, i thought that i should order the type x (which have a thicker topline and should be overall more forgiving) to see how they compare to the gauge design handmades! However i think you are definitely missing out if you do not try a set of these !!! Alpha_Pro what is your take on them Edited September 12, 2006 by plus1
alpha_pro
i wouldnt mind trying the type x's but im not willing to buy another set as i am completely happy with the j's. the only thing is i struggle at times with the longer irons so i was possibly thinking a combo set with the type x's 4 and 5 irons while the type j's 6-pw. the 6-pw isnt going anywhere or for any other set, they are firmly in the bag! i still have to ask chris if i can buy single type x 4 and 5 irons. it might even be 3 and 4 irons type x's. i dunno, maybe he'll see this and answer it for me. :tsg_smilie_smile:

+TourSpecGolfer
IMO there isnt anything better than the type J in regards to feel and performance IF you are a good striker. Feels like an MB and performs like a players CB. Best Irons I have ever experienced to date. Im not changing anytime soon. The Type X and Pro II dont feel as good as the type J due to the undercut, I would compare the Type X to the TS-202's as far as feel and performance with their long irons being just a tad easier to hit. If you are a good striker and like great feel nothing beats these, if i had to keep only one epon product in the bag it would be the type J's over the 460 driver.
