IRON SHAFT FLEX FOR A 100 MPH DRIVER S.SPEED

Please TSGers help me on this.

I have no access to any fitter or clubmaker in my area.

I am not taking lessons right now so I can not ask my pro for advice.

My swing speed with the driver is 100-102 mph and my downswing is fast.

Wich flex should I use in my steel shafted irons?

I have been on the range with a couple of Ping i5 6 irons, one reg and one stiff and feel the stiff is straighter with more control and not so hard to swing, but the owner of the shop in wich I usually buy says that the range is one thing and the course is another. He says 18 holes with a stiff steel shaft is going to be too much (even if he has not ever seen me hitting balls or playing).

What would you do?

Would graphite stiff shafts be a "middle of the road" solution?

Thanks

Hi Bela,

Your SS with Driver is similar to my own, up until a few months ago I had always played regular flex shafts in my irons and have used graphite shafts for a couple of years.

Imagine my surprise when I took the plunge and had a set of Miura's made for me, my clubmaker advised me to go for lightweight stiff flex Nippon shafts ( NS Pro 950 GH S Flex), the change has been remarkable, these shafts feel so good, my accuracy and ball control has improved dramatically, and I am shooting low scores as a result.

My experience of graphite shafts is that they tend to promote a very high ball flight, give good distance at the expense of accuracy and control, but that is only my experience and I do know that I tend to hit the ball high because I have a steep angle of attack.

Not all stiff shafts are the same, even though the actual flex is supposedly the same, weight, where the shaft is stiff ( tip, butt, mid section) will all have an effect on how the shaft plays, I realise from your post that your options are restricted, but there must be a clubfitter somewhere in your locality who could help and advise you. If not then perhaps you should consider a trip to a good club fitting centre because you could end up like me, I spent years buying clubs that did not suit me, it was only when I got properly fitted that i realised the difference!
