Epon Iron Classification Clarification

Are the J irons considered a Cavity Back or Blade?

I know the Type S Irons are a Cavity Back and the X irons are larger Cavity Backs, but I thought the J Irons were considered a Blade.

Do you pick out the right EPON irons for you by your handicap?

Do the J and S Perform the same?

I wish I could read Japanese.

i think they are considered cavity backs.

i have a set of type js and they perform better than all the iron sets i've tried to date.

the js are not the most forgiving cavity back ever made though.

well struck shots feel outstanding. very workable.

i have not tried the type s.

if you have tried them how would you say they perform?

I have played two rounds with the S's.

I really didn't think the CB1006's would be chased out of the bag... but they are sitting now. I even played a game with the Miura's in between rounds with the Epons. The Epons are the most solid, best feeling Irons I have ever hit. Even miss hits are solid. The clubs do seem to be very forgiving. Can still draw the ball but much harder to fade. The ball just wants to go straight.

I'm in Love with them. :tsg_smiley_question:

Physically speaking, the J's have the thinnest topline, S in the middle and X the thickest (which is still pretty thin compared to other brands).

The same goes for the iron length from heel to toe, with the X being the largest, S right in the middle and J the smallest sized.

That said, picking the right Epon depends on your personal preference for setup/address ie whether you like a thin topline or thicker one... do you feel more confident with the larger iron or you like small compact irons.

Feel wise the Type J's are about as pure an iron as you can get but as 808hack said, this is when they are well struck. They are not as forgiving as the other two so if your swing is not consistent perhaps the S or X is the way to go. Some have said the X's and probably the S's are a bit more clicky on impact feel wise.

All three irons are top notch in craftmanship, design and performance, and they would all probably be the gamers in anyone's bag (as you know since you've played the Type S) :tsg_smiley_question:

The J's are at least 1/2 club longer than all my other irons and I have no idea why-it's not the lofts. I've said it over and over--it's like hitting the poor little ball with a sledgehammer or driving a nail with a flush hit of a heavy hammer into fine hardwood. I've never had that feel before in anything and I can't think of anything I haven't played. All other clubs are now solidly in the garage (well, I do have a set of TS CB2's coming Monday but I'm sure they won't make the bag--bought 'em in a moment of weakness). Never thought I'd rest ole' Tommy Lehman, but he's on the bench.

I'm a low handicapper, but not the best ball striker. Yet, these are plenty forgiving, great around the greens, everything you'd look to a moderate game improvement club for. If the S clubs are clicky, leave 'em alone and go with the J's. While the S's may be moderately more forgiving, can't see how you can top the feel and that's what breeds the confidence to hit good shots.

If I was flushing the ball everytime the J irons would be in the bag. But, the S irons forgiveness on a toey mis-hit put a smile on my face. Nobody else knew it wasn't flushed. :tsg_smiley_question:

I don't notice any click (maybe the ball?) at all. I've even looked down a few times to see if I'd really hit the ball it was so Butta.

Compared side by side were

Epon S irons

Miura CB 1006 iron

toustage CB2 irons

tourstage x-blade2

I didn't believe they could be so much better.

This is why I ask.. how do they recommend their Irons?

Personal taste?

Handicap?

I noticed the prices just went up...

I think we better quit bragging about them. :atsg_logo_anim:

Judging from your signature, it looks like you've moved on to type 'J' from type 'S'. Can you please tell us a bit more about the decision for the switch?

Started out as curiosity... had to hit the J irons.

My ball striking has been pretty good so I wanted to compare the two.

The feel is just outstanding!!!!! Forgiveness is almost equal to the S's.

Both are outstanding irons. I think it just comes down to how much forgiveness you are looking for. The S's do hit the ball a bit farther, but this is the one thing that is not imprtant to me.

Played Golf with my buddy today who carries a rescue from 5 iron on...

Standing on the tee box, waiting to hit. I handed him my 4 iron and set an old ball down and had him hit it out in to the Desert right behind us.

He's convinced he can't hit a 5 iron, 4 iron etc.

He takes a swing and creams it. Ball takes off, perfect gentle draw. My guess.. 190yrds.

He's basically stunned. He's starting to show this grin but wait... gotta hold it back...

can't do it.

Me "How'd that feel"

Him, stunned never can fully answer. Apparently the feel of the J irons can't be fully described.

Callaway lost one today.

I see that the brands of choice are: Epon, Tourstage and GD. Have you hit the Milled MBs? If yes, is the S even softer than the Milled MB? I tried the Milled MBs this past weekend and it was "butta."

I have the J's and the Technica II's (like the Type S) and have owned and hit all of the Gauge irons and the Tourstages. I have never, and I repeat never, hit anything that felt as solid, smooth and powerful as the Epons, and particularly the J's. The II's don't have the same smoothness of feel, but the power is certainly there. In my opinion, the "butta" feel of some of the other Gauges, Tourstages and Mizunos isn't accompanied by the solid, powerful feel and strike that I get from the Epons. I know that this is all subjective as is any discussion of "feel"--you just got to try them and you'll know what I'm trying to say.
