Driver, 3 wood & UT

Recommended Posts

There is a line of thought as to the weight of the driver, 3 wood and UT shafts.

At a very basic level:

the driver has a 70g shaft

the 3 wood a 80g shaft

the UT a 100g shaft

The question is, what do you use and why :tsg_smiley_crazy:

65g Driver, 80g 3-wood, don't currently have a utility but am considering one.

D- 67g Roddio 6WA stiff

3 - 72 g PT-7 Stiff

U - 85g - UT-85 stiff

previously i had D- 75g, 3- 85g, U- 100 (All v2)

I tend to chose the shaft and am ok with a weight within a range - D- 65-75, 3 -70-85 U - 85-100. More important is which shaft feels right in terms of feel, responsiveness etc. weight is secondary

I prefer heavy.

Current driver with the Roddio W-8WA is 81.5 gm. I went with an S-flex but only because the X wasn't available. The X is an 85gm shaft.

Epon Technity 3 wood has the GD Quattro-Tech shaft 86gm.

Utility not currently in the bag but my G-Field has the UT-85 85gm. That said, next utility will probably have a 95gm shaft in it.

I like heavier shafts as I've mentioned before, as they just feel better to me and I think they allow to swing better. I find I don't swing lighter shafts very well. Not as much feel or whatever.

I like heavier shafts in my woods as well. I can't feel the head with lighter shafts or my timing is out..... definetly a feel thing.

Blader -X we seem to have very similar views.

Once again I find myself in agreement with your views, my driver shaft at 62 gms ( Axiv V 6070) feels too light, my 3 wood has a heavier, stiffer shaft as does my hybrid/utility and I much prefer the feel and balance of the heavier clubs, possibly because my swing is relatively slow and smooth. The trend towards heavier shafts in FW's and Hybrids started when Driver heads started to grow beyond the 300cc mark, which resulted in significantly heavier head weights, so it was nescesary to reduce shaft weights to bring the overall SW down. In this age of ultra light Titanium driver heads, with changeable weights, the need for ultra light shafts may not be as important!

I am contemplating going to a heavier driver shaft, as I am getting better results from my three wood than from my driver, has anyone else experience of this?

I have experimented with different weight shafts in the driver - 50sm 60s, 70s, 80s and also with different flexes. After a lot of experimentation, I have found that going with a heavy shaft allows you to ease up on the flex, however it is not as accurate, if I go heavy and maintain the flex, its accurate, but responsiveness and length suffer. End result, A high 60s weight with a stiff flex works best for me. If go in the high 70s/low 80s, then I could get almost similar results (but not quite as good) with a SR flex.

I'm just the opposite. I tried going lighter as I've mentioned on this site before and it was just horrible. Went back to heavy and results have been great. I find it interesting how varied clubs can be for individuals in this game and similar results can be obtained with very different club/shaft combos.
