Epon 460 vs Callaway FT-5

My good golfing buddy plays Callaway. He loves his Callaways.

He's playing a new FT-5 w/fuji E360 (S) Draw Bias. Hits it real well.

I finally got him to hit the Epon and his Driver to see if one was longer than the other.

It was just the two of us today with nobody behind us so we took the time to hit some extra tee shots. On 9 different holes.

He would hit his driver, then the Epon.

9 times the Epon was longer. No less than 3-4 yards, two of them almost 20 yards.

He averaged about 10 yards farther AND those hit with the Epon were closer to the middle of the fairway.

He's trying not to show how bummed out he is. He can't believe his club was just down right beaten today, with him at the controls. This was as good of an independant test as you can get.

EPON - ruled the course today. I can't tell you how happy I was... I hate callaway... personal thing.

Anyone else have any similar experiences??

The shaft alone would explain 90% of the distance difference. I am surprised the gain was not more.

surely its only an independant test if you put the 2 heads on identical shafts. The roddio should be way better the the fuji in this case. You maye find that the ft-5 consistantly outdrives the Epon with Roddio shaft installed. Be interesting to see how a roddio would go in an ft-5

ive been playing the epon 460 for most of this season, i had the epons all in 9.5 suited up with different shafts, (code-6, axiv 7072, axiv 6070, and the 8074 ) i recently got a FT5 9.5 with code 6 and it has knocked every single epon out of the bag !!!!! the epon definitely sounds and feels better but for me the ft5 has a better flight and more roll....carry is about the same but the epon had virtually no roll........

If longer equals better I would be playing the Srixon ZR600 for its higher ball speeds. My longest combo with the Epon is still the DREV Tour SR flex at 247cpm's. Its longer than my current Roddio combo but doesnt give me the baby draw i love as a fader. I take the fairway + good feel over 5-10 yds any day.

We have FT-5's, Super Quads, Sumo2's demo's etc.. If you mess with shafts and specs enough you can find any driver to beat any driver, it just takes fine tuning and tweaking. I have taken a Honma RF460 with a 3 star ultra whippy R flex that smokes just about anything, a full second of hang time more, and about 15 yards more carry, this club dies in the wind though but this just goes to show its more about how the shaft, specs, and head characteristics fit your swing.

I hit the FT-5 at a Cally demo on Monday and after two swings despite the nice drives handed it back to the rep. Nasty sounding and feeling. If you are big on feel and sound which I am pull the trigger on the Mizuno JPX E310...best I have ever hit including the 510DF and the 300 Holy Grail.

I'm with you on the FT-5's feel and sound. I wanted to like this driver but I hit it twice and handed it back. If I went with a US spec Callaway it would be the 460 Tour.

Callaway's ERC III CF and ERC Hyper are in a different league though! Amazing sound and feel

The Epon looks like a golf club.

Ultimately it is about the shaft. I think every serious golfer should go through the process of identifying the shafts that work best for them.

I also believe the Japanese shafts are better in terms of research, technolgy and quality.

Jack simply couldn't use an FT-5 with a hangover. Reminds him to much of the 30 JD & Coke beauty queens........

I'm with you on that one Jack! The ERC is one fine club having had it in my bag for a little bit, but the feel of the Epon even outclassed that one for me.

I look a lot at all the domestic equipment here in the States, but nothing even tempts me to want to hit them let alone replace my precious JDM equip.
