dcfas
Hi folks, Some new observations and insight to the PRGR TR 900MD irons. 4-PW; M-43 shafts. First and foremost: these irons are not for the faint of heart, i.e., if you are looking for forgiveness look elsewhere. The 900MD's are demanding and require a good swing and solid, ball compressing impact, without which will result in a variety of unpleasant sprays, both left and right, high and low. That being said, conversely, if you do put a good swing on it the result is no less than thrilling. I'm talking about towering 4 irons which stop on a dime. The ball flight throughout the set is high and boring. I'm fascinated by the trajectory-- while similar to my set of MP-14's, there is a pronounced "hang time," so to speak. Feel is pronounced, as well. While feeling less mass at impact than the 14's, there is a distinct "snap" at contact. It has taken a few weeks for me to adjust, but I have come to really enjoy the feel of these clubs at impact. The sole and grind is also interesting. Once again, these irons are demanding and will dig. However, there is some leeway if you are a touch fat. I did notice that they cut through the rough like butter-- and I would like to emphasize this-- I'm not exaggerating here. The shafts, as Chris observed in a previous post, are indeed smooth. I'm trying to adjust from DGS300's, and they feel incredibly light to me. Ironically, when I have my friends swing them without exception they all respond that the clubs feel heavy. I think the 14's are stiffer and more solid feeling, while the 900's are smoother and snappier. The face is considerably larger than the 14's, and the lofts are stiffer by a full club (the 14's are nearly 10 years old and this is expected). The sweetspot is obviously larger, but if you are coming from blades this will probably not be an issue. Workability? The 900's are workable, left and right, but I am having trouble with punching low, and hitting knock downs. I believe this will require more time and practice for me largely due to the size of the clubface (larger). Chipping is also an adjustment due to the lofts being 2-4 degrees stiffer (MP-14 PW: 50* / 900MD PW: 47*). All in all I am committed to these clubs and am having a lot of fun adjusting to them. A final note: Quality is obvious and stands out. The "swing feel," finish, and attention to detail is notable and satisfying. I am looking forward to the rest of the season. Please respond or PM me if you like regarding specific questions, or pix, etc. d
marckhor
Does anyone know how these irons fare if compared to the Tourstage z101. I'm currently considering them but does not have the opportunity to test them before buying. How stiff does the M43 shaft plays to?

I'm currently considering them but does not have the opportunity to test them before buying. How stiff does the M43 shaft plays to? Hello m, Sorry about the delay. I believe that the 900MD's are considerably less forgiving than the Z101's. I have, however, not played with the Tourstages, and am estimating by the specs and my experience with the PRGR's. The shafts at M-43 are geared for a driver swing speed of 96 miles per hour (43 meters per second). I find them to be light and noticeably more flexible than DGS300's. Results, however, do not seem to be as dramatic in difference as does feel. They are beautiful irons, though tempermental. I would advise a ten or lower handicap for this set. d
+TourSpecGolfer
For sure maybe even lower than a ten hcp.

dcfas
dThanks for the update. I ordered one set via e-bay last Friday. There seems to be a few in the market. Looking forward to receiving mine and will share with you my opinion compared to the Tourstage z101. Cheers Marckhor Congrats! Please do let us know what you think. I like these clubs more and more. I'm still wondering about the lie angle adjustments and hate to fork another 50 bucks over for a third opinion-- but it is critical. You may find yourself washing and polishing them often. d
marckhor
D Had a hit on my new set this evening. Given that it is winter in Melbourne - 8'C outside, I only attempted to hit the 5,7 and P irons. The rest are still in wraps. To being with, I currenly play to 12 HC and has been using Tourstage z101s with DG R300 for about 3 years now. I do not find the size of the club head intimidating as the z101s are even smaller. Both heads feel very soft upon contact. I find the TR900MD is probably a tad softer and crispier than the z101s. I cannot compare the distance as it is pitch dark. The ballflight is quite similar between the two irons. Maybe the z101s are a slightly higher on the 5 iron. This is probably due to the tungsten weight in the z101s. I cannot confirm whether my z101s are from Endo as I purchased them from the Bridgestone dealer who is unsure of the origin. I find the weight of these shafts lighter than the DG R300 that I have on the 101s. It feels that my swingspeed has increased slightly probably due to the weight of the shafts. I also find that the DG shafts are livelier and provides more feedback than the PRGR proprietry shafts. I think the weight of the TR shafts offset the flex in the DG R300 as both shafts feel similar in flex. Not sure how we compare M43 to DG R300 flex. I was initially unsure of bringing this club out to the course this Saturday but I am right now. I had build up my confidence level on this club after just hitting 50+ balls. Just got to be conservative on the distance for each of these clubs. I also tested out the Gauge Design GAS2 Sand wedge. They certainly look very nice with the black. The feel of this club is also soft and it sure has a lot of bite on them. It seems to be tearing the cover the the range balls as I have to wipe the surface after every hit. More comment when I visit the range on Thursday.
