bogeydog
I have been thinking about this topic for quite a while. I know that GI clubs are designed to be more forgiving, easier to hit, launch faster, etc. By I don't understand why the loft progression is so severe. Here is a comparison of the Mizuno JPX E500 irons, with the new Epons. Club JPX 701 501 301 3 20 ? 20 20 4 22 21 22 23 5 24 24 25 26 6 27 27 28 30 7 31 31 32 34 8 35 35 36 38 9 39 40 41 42 PW 44 45 46 46 Now I know that club manufacturers realized that most golfers wanted more distance, so they started a campaign a few years ago to increase the image of their products by strengthening the loft. In some cases the 5 irons or today approximate the 3 irons of yesterday. If that is the case, who can hit a 3I which is really a 1 or 2 iron? Not a high handicapper. Questions I ask to myself....What does a player with a slower SS do? They don't generate enough SS to hit long irons well. So hey buy a hybrid? What does a player do if they are a mid to low HC, want forgiveness, but not the strong lofts? Bend the loft, but get more sole bounce? Buy a shaft that increases trajectory to overcome some of the strong loft? I can't make technical sense of this, but I can think of marketing reasons. Any thoughts? 777
Loft wise I think you are right on...However, I think club head design (location of CG) and shaft type/length would also have to be added into the equation to make full sense of what club manufacturers are doing as of recent. I am no expert but this is my assessment of current design trends

I guess it comes down to would you rather have more distance or an easier time getting the ball into the air.
