indharbor
Hello, I would like to ask anyone who have played AF-901 w Shimada steel shaft and share their experience on the shaft. How do they compare to NS PRO 850 or 950s?? I have never tried nor actually haven't really heard the shaft before. I am about to pull trigger on AF-901 19 and 22 and the shaft is my last decision. I just got AF-701 NS PRO 1150s and I am not sure if going with graphite option would create little too much distance gap between 5 iron and 4 hybrid. I would much appreciate your input. Spoon
i use project x hl in my irons but for the af901 i opted for the ut machline shafts. cannot go wrong with this combo. others will attest to this as well. i have also hit it with the stock machline shafts it is pretty good as well but i do prefer graphite on my hybrids and this is essentially one:) i have heard people putting nspro750gh wit great success. my advice is to experiment. give the shimadas or ut machline a try. either way you cant go wrong, good luck
Droopy
I'm considering getting an AF901 also with a UT Machline shaft. My questions are: What loft should I get to replace my 3 iron? Also, what length should I get? I play the Mizuno E500 with 950 stiff, standard length and 1 deg flat. Thanks, Droopy Edited April 9, 2008 by Droopy
+TourSpecGolfer
I like the stock shaft best myself Reg & Stiff flex work perfect for me. These UT's are pretty unreal, they have a high C.O.R face like the AF701, I hit my 19* about 200-220 with a nice mid high and piercing trajectory. No Hooks and Slices. I am interested in trying a steel shaft in one. I am thinking NS750 or NS850 shafts.
indharbor
Anybody know tip diameter of AF-901s? taper or parallel? I just got 19, 22 with Machline UT shafts but for strange reason, the shaft just doesn't seem to work for me. So I am considering them reshafting them with NS750 or 850s. I love the overall design and feel but just the shaft isn't good match for me.

The tip size is 0.370" parallel. How are the 701's doing? Forgiving eh?

Forgiving eh? Thanks T for answering my question. 701s are working great for me. I have been switching between 701 and blades and not only 701 gives me more confidence, they feel more solid to me. They have unique tinkering sound and feel but works great for me. Now, 901s, I am not sure what it is. I don't think it's softness that's causing the trouble. I just can't get the timing right and get the club back to square at impact. I consider myself reasonably solid ball striker but it feels like my swing is way off when I swing 901s. Major problem with 901s is the inconsistency so I guess I would have to go with steel shafts. I do LOVE the feel and forgivness factor. gocchin
Well considering your irons have 1150GH in your irons.... it could very well be that the Mach Line UT shafts are way too light in the 901's so they don't just feel right for you, especially if you swing them like an iron and expect them to feel like one. Perhaps you do need a heavier feel to get your timing right. So either a steel shaft or even maybe GD Tour AD UT-95's might do the trick. I am going to pull it out and going to give it a try with that on 901 and see if it works out. Now, do you think I would need weight plugs on 901 reshafting to achieve around D0 swingweight? I know some irons do for higher swingweights but wonder 901 would need one, too. Thanks!

The 850 will still be a good 30g or so lighter than the 1150's but better than 60g lighter!

I have that in my X-UT and that club is absolutely solid and that UT95 shaft has an enormous amount to do with it. I know in my swing, heavier shafts are better than lighter when it comes to graphite. When I had experimented going with lighter driver shafts, I couldn't get good results. Once I switched back to heavier, 80gm shafts, I felt whole again.
