aperture
Guys, need your help on this one.... My previous driver 2008 tourstage viq 10.5* SR with vd_50 shaft. This driver gave a crazy hook at the end of the ball flight and ball spin above 3500+(very high ball flight). These are the spec on my new driver. Head: geotech black 455. Loft 9.5 Shaft: matrix xcon-5 stiff grip: iomic lenght: 45 sw: D2 Total weight : 308 my data on zelocity launch monitor. (average of 8 swings) ss: 98.4 ball velocity: 138 launch angle: 14.4 ball spin: 3000 carry: 221.4 total distance: 239.8 ptr: 140.2 CPM: 249-250 ( don't quite understand about it) swing tempo: smooth.. but I tend to be agressive on the downswing handicap: 12.3 Prefered ball fight: mid On course report: Ball flight is mid.. and only 2 or 3 shots will stray left or right. I want to know whether this driver is fitted to me correctly or will I be better with a firm or regular shaft? heavier shaft (xcon-6)? Or 10.5* head to improve my distance. TGS expert and others please need your input. Thank you Edited November 4, 2008 by aperture

That aggressive move on the downswing was probably what was causing the hook on the ViQ. Also based on your spin for both drivers, may I ask if you have a very steep swing plane ie on your down swing do you really attack the ball by coming down on it? There are a few things that can cause a very high launch and spin including a very steep path to the ball and even teeing the ball up higher than it should be. The X-con 5 is a naturally a high launch shaft but your spin could be a bit lower. At 98mph your total distance is about average. Based on your course report, if you're happy with the mid trajectory and are pretty much in the fairway then you're probably good. Distance is good but staying in the fairway is even better. aperture
Thanks for your inputs Gocchin, I did ask my local pro about the excessive spin I had, he says that the excessive spin I generate come from my hands and arms. In order to improve my distance (with less spin), I could incorporate more of my lower body. I am working on it. I am quite ok with the geotech/matrix combo, but I think that I don't fully load the shaft on my downswing. Unlike when I tried the regular xcon-5, I can always feel the kick on the shaft, which is unbelievable. Is there any drill/technique I could try to load the shaft even more? Your inputs are greatly appreciated. Edited November 5, 2008 by aperture
gocchin
If a shaft is too stiff it won't matter what you do you won't be able to load it. A softer shaft is easier to load and will kick harder for faster swingers, but then control becomes an issue. The right shaft is the balance between kick/distance and control/accuracy. It's better to be 240 yards in the fairway than 275 yards in the trees or lake. Feel is also a very subjective thing... softer flex shafts with higher torque ratings will naturally provide more feel. As for techniques to get max energy transfer from your backswing to downswing... we will have to ask Brett Smith. (^_^)
aperture
Again a very useful input from you, Gocchin. Guess I just need to commit on my driver and improve my swing. Hopefully I will be able to reduce the spin rate and increace my ball velocity. Thanks Edited November 6, 2008 by aperture
jacksonlui
my swing speed is only 90 at best and my total distance is 240 on average. i try to keep my launch at about 18-20 and the spin at about 2500. i know a lot of fitters say i need a lower launch and more spin because of a lower swing speed but i disagree because it's been working well for me. i hit it high and i get a lot of carry and most of it is due to low spin. my 10.5 geotech RM has the code6 firm in it and i get these numbers on my vector. i get the increase in launch angle and low spin by hitting up on it. try addressing with the low point 3-5 inches behind the ball, this will gaurantee that you hit up on it. you'll have to tee it higher but not too high otherwise you might get a skymark, so becareful.. maybe use some tape at first. report back to us and let us know how it progresses.
