Henry
With all things being equal, how much distance would one lose if you go with 1/2 inch shorter length shafts. I have been club fitted with 5 iron being 37.25 length at 58.5 degree angle. I do understand that ultimately, my average distance may increase because of consistancy but I am just wondering if there is a measure given for distance loss by going with a shorter shaft length. I'm 5'10" and I play 1/2" shorter than U.S standard because I come down on the ball very aggressively as a picker. I noticed my chances of a bad shot which in my case is usually fat has decreased. My distance and accuracy has improved by a noticeable margin. If your bad shot is fat its worth a try.

Henry, I am a short guy at 5'-3". Over time, I have played standard to now 1/2" short. For the last 6 sets or so I play 58.5* and 37.5" 5I. All around better play due to ball contact. For me, finding the best flex and swing weight for to properly load the shaft was crucial. In my current set of Yamaha Tour with KBS 5.5 I found that D3ish was optimal in the 3-8 and slightly higher in the wedges. Sounds a little heavy for some but helps my trap the ball better, improved feel and swing path. Distance for me is not longer or shorter but more consistent. I would get distance out of your thoughts.
