2-Iron Replacement

I'm getting back into golf after about a 7 year hiatus (I averaged about 1-2 rounds a year from 2002 on).

At the time, I was consistently shooting somewhere in the 74-76 range and had good distance. Fairly strong iron player so would often forego a driver or 3-wood off the tee in favor of a solid 2I that would still put the ball out there 260 or so with roll. In the 7 year period where I wasn't playing much I became a very avid rock climber and the increases to forearm strength have really added to my clubhead speed. I've been slowly updating almost all the clubs in my bag.

Mizuno MP-29 Irons w/ S400 2-PW -> Mizuno MP-29 Irons w/ KBS Tour X-Stiff 6.5 Shafts, spined 2I, 4I-9I

MP-29 PW, Cleveland 51 & 57 Degree Wedges -> Fourteen 48, 52, 56, 60 Wedges w/ KBS Wedge Nickel Shafts X-Stiff

Kasco 9.5 Degree 0.5 Degree Open Driver -> TaylorMade Tour Burner TP 9.5 w/ Axiv-V 7080 X Shaft.

Sonartec 14 Degree Fairway Wood with Speeder 757 X Shaft -> No Change

While I'm confident in the 2I off the tee I was considering adding a hybrid iron to make that club more useful from other lies as well as for landing the ball softer on the greens on long approaches. I want to consider a 5 Wood or a 2 or 3 Iron Hybrid with a steel shaft and want to find something that still allows for good shot shaping and errs on the flat lie/open club face side rather than the draw/closed that most hybrids are. Is there anything you guys recommend? Assuming that ball striking is consistent, would you recommend the 5W or the hybrid route as the most versatile?

David,

my experience with Hybrids is limited to say the least and especially with JDM. But the Titleist 909h is 0.5 degree open and therefore looks very square at address.

Only you can decide if a higher traj/ softer landing shot is preferable to a fairway wood shot at the type of courses you play. I think Hybrids can instill more confidence from tricky lies, but that is an individual thought, you sound like a solid player which will give you a wider choice. Maybe play around with demo's until you've narrowed down your choice.

I'm sure there are others on here that can provide greater experience/knowldege but my preference is a hybrid instead of a 5 wood, but then i'm no TW.

.....good luck

And I'm a 5 wood player. I don't care for hybrids at all.

My thoughts are that if you like the iron look and feel, a "driving iron" hybrid will work and look better to you than the wood looking hybrid.

Epon, Tourstage, Mizuno, Fourteen, Miura all make great 19* hybrid irons.

If you're looking for a forgiving 2 iron that still looks like a blade you'll fall in love with the Miura IC-6001. Shaft it up with a KBS (steel) hybrid or regular iron shaft and you're set.

Good Luck

That's great feedback guys, thanks. I think that I'll try to give both a 5 wood and a more iron-like hybrid and see how it goes from there.

Much appreciated!

I use mainly a TourStage X-UT which I feel is the best hybrid ever made. Trajectory is on a line and its great off the tee, from the fairway and even out of bunkers. TourStage has a newer model now, but I still feel the model I use which is a little boxy, is the best yet.

I also recently picked up the Miura IC-6001. I had Goodsie shaft it up with a Black KBS shaft as well as bend it down a few degrees and this thing is a total rocket launcher off the tee. In fact, you might enjoy this same set up from your previous description of how well you like to hit an iron off the tee. I don't really have room in the bag for this club but I keep in there to have fun with it. And let me tell you, its really a lot of fun.

Good luck in your search. If I get some time, I'll try to snap a few shots of both to show you.
