Jerry in China
Remember the golf digest talked about driver length a few weeks ago. It did not answer any question though. In that article, it said that 50% played 46, the longer shafted driver about 5% longer, and the rest get a 5%distance loss. Basically, it is just a gamble without fitting. However, I have a theory of my own. I am building a EMS. I choose to go 46. I am using the af tour iron, with very weak loft. I am tring to have more accuracy in the irons, and make the driver to be a loose cannon. Thus i am choosing the EMS, more MOI, over the 102, with more control. With higher forgiveness, I am able to bear the 46 length, as mis-shot is not that terrible, or to say I will have more buffer in finding the sweet spot. Am I doing the right thing? In a fitting session, I really did find the difference between a 45 and a 46. Maybe I did not spend enough time.
Duffer19
I really don't think there would be too much difference with 45 or 46" playing length. I have mine at 45.5" but my EMS head weight is 199.7 g together with my 53 g Machine Proto and a 50 g Nowon Expert grip, the SW came out to be D0.5. My target SW is D0 to D1. I was told that the weight of the EMS could be as light as 193 g which makes a big difference in SW at certain playing length. I am more concern with SW than that 1 inch difference. Spoon
i am on the same boat, with my old ems i added an additional 8 grams of lead tape to the head to bring up the swingweight to around d3 at 45". i can do with 45.5 but choke down anyway so 45 for me is ideal. i probably will gain distance with a 46 3/10 tries but would opt for the more consistent length. Duffer19
8 g lead tape is close to 10 inches long. That's a lot of tape on the driver head.
Jerry in China
thanks guys. the 193g head is for the 46 length, and can ended up to a D-2 sw with a GD DI - 6, 46". That is where I am going now. When with 45", to keep the same SW, need to get a 203g head.
Spoon
8 g lead tape is close to 10 inches long. That's a lot of tape on the driver head. it was either the tape or getting a new head with custom weight. unfortunately i had the head already
MatthewC
thanks guys. the 193g head is for the 46 length, and can ended up to a D-2 sw with a GD DI - 6, 46". That is where I am going now. When with 45", to keep the same SW, need to get a 203g head. The added length is proven to add somewhat extra distance but at the same time somewhat higher chance of mis hits. Im interested in your theory with the uber forgiving head with longer length. Please update us with your results with this and if you notice any extra distance. Edited September 7, 2010 by MatthewC
