Posted January 22, 201213 yr comment_174870 Hi All, Hoping y'all can help/provide advice with my iron shaft decision! :) I recently went to a fitting at GolfTEK and have attached the results to this post. Some background/context: 1. This data was all from a Mizuno MP53 6-iron head. 2. The Mizuno shaft optimizer rated my tempo as a "3" which I believe says that my transition is "deliberate/moderate". In viewing my swing, the fitter said I was more of a "hitter" than "sweeper". Loft, length, and lie are all standard based on fitting results. 3. The shafts I tested (as you'll see from the pic) were: PX 5.5 and 5.0 (both non-flighted), PX 5.5 graphite, KBS Tour-Stiff, and Aerotech Steelfiber i95 Stiff. 4. I currently play TM TP CB's with Aerotech Steelfiber i80 reg-flex shafts...they worked well last summer, but as I've been working on maintaing lag, I find them to be too light. I also can't feel where they are duing the swing and tend to come up and out more often resulting in horrible thin/skull shots. Although I'm happy with most of the results from the fitting, I'm concerned with the weight of the steel shafts I tested (fatigue), and the potential "harshness" on thin mis-hits (left elbow slight tendonitis). I also know that subconciously, I don't swing as hard when I'm out on an actual course, so I'm expecting swingspeed and ball speed to drop slightly when I'm actually playing rather than just hitting balls at a range or fitting center. The graphite shafts showed large gains in terms of yardage, but were also not as consistent/accurate in terms of dispersion. Would love to hear your thoughts, comments, questions etc. I'm open to shafts beyond the ones I tested...I'm also considering the NSPRO 1050GH in stiff, and MODUS-3 in stiff -- how do these shafts compare to the ones I tested based on the results? Thank you all for your time! :) Edited January 22, 201213 yr by siagolf838
January 22, 201213 yr comment_174871 I just went to Aerotech Steel Fibers from 1050 GH Nippons. Love the feel and tight dispersion. I went with Regular Flex vs. Stiff in the Nippons. Head weight and swing weight tend to translate to feeling where the club is during the swing. My irons were C9 with the Nippons and with the Aerotech's and some tip weighting they are D2 and the clubs feel so much better. If you had luck with the Aerotech's move up in weight...
January 22, 201213 yr Author comment_174873 Thanks for your input. I did test the Aerotech Steelfiber i95-stiff as part of the fitting and although I love the distance I was getting with it, it just wasn't very accurate for me.
January 22, 201213 yr comment_174879 That surprises me about the accuracy. I hit about 25 balls with the 8 iron after the re-shaft and was amazed at how close the balls all landed! Loved the extra distance too as you described. I hit a couple 165 yd 8 irons.... I have heard good things about the KBS C Tapers....

January 23, 201213 yr Author comment_174885 I've also heard good things about the C-Tapers. The new irons I'm thinking of are the Bridgestone J40 DPC, and unfortunately they don't show the C-Tapers as a shaft option -- even as an upcharge. :( I wonder if the MODUS has similar characteristics to the C-Taper?
January 23, 201213 yr comment_174901 My bro in law came back from Fiji where he played with Mizzy jpx800 with dgr300 & loved it. He immedialtly asked me and I said go thru a Mizuno fitting. He called me as it recommended some light shaft. I told him to hit the recommended shaft vs the r300 in real world. Even the fitter said use the r300 afterwards.

January 23, 201213 yr comment_174909 Very interesting data! Question to all shaft experts: Is there any graphite shaft (for iron/hybrids) with tighter dispersion than steel shafts??

January 23, 201213 yr Author comment_174912 Modus and C-tapers are night and day different. Thanks Potuna -- can you please elaborate in terms of ball launch/height, spin etc. how these 2 play? I understand that the Modus has a much softer butt than anything else out there right now, and potentially a better "feel", and am trying to figure out if they would be right for me. I guess a comparison between the Modus and the PX 5.5 would be great as well as Bridgestone doesn't offer the C-Tap direct from factory.
