5 days of:

ryoma d1---crazy 80 ls noir 7.7 9.5*

kamui pro pk-x ---diamana X 70 s 10*

jbeam 425 tour---roddio m6 proto shingo spec 2010 9*

consistantly the most reliable was the ryoma. finding fairways when not dead centered this is the winner. and its a noticeable winner...........

the miss hits with this over the 5 days were easily the best. even when i was hitting horribly i wasnt really dead. and i hit some shockers.

the good ones were good distance without standing out that put me well into play.

i get htis combo pretty high and "normally " with a small draw, but the weekend i had the slices on so the over all distance wasnt great.

the ones i did get well were pretty perfect.

cud play this driver exclusively and never long for another IF i wanted total consistancy. like any normal golfer does....

BUT....................,

then theres the jbeam 425 tour...

this IS the longest of these. out of the screws, this is the kahoona.

on the first day when i was actually driving very well, this was the longest from centre.

by id think 10+ yards. over the kamui, they play same length 44.75 inch..

(the ryoma at 45) but getting this to go straight is anothe thing. 9* is PROBABLY a tough ask for all but the best drivers

i cud easily have used another1* at least in this.... and if so id think id wud have been even longer.

but as it is . the ability to get this to draw is non existant.. every shot is a straight thump with afade to the right.... 100% of the time

hence its too stiff or too low.. the launch wasnt high enough. esp with the cut down shingo spec..... at the full length shing this thing would be amazing im thinking.

alas. this one stayed in australia bec the use of it on longy links will be super.

miss hits with it are NOT as long as the others bec the amount this slices takes yards off the ball.

the jbeam IS the longest driver form the middle. but its also has the biggest dispersion.

the kamui kp-x....

is 10 either side of the other 2 on average.

last 4 months ive been gaming this for a reason.

i hit this appalingly badly over the weekend. so much so i had to drop it for the ryoma last 2 days.

but as a collective good-bad-ugly . this is my prefered driver.

i love the look of it over the other 2 .. much prefe rit...........

ilike the feel of it more.. nad i love the height it gets with the lighter weight setting.

i didnt put the heavier weight setting s in it .. asi wanted it to soar... when igot it that it did do ver ywell. but i wasnt hitting it well.

its no where near as "calm" as the ryoma on bad days. (i think thats as much the shaft seleciton as the head)..

the better middled shots were prob 10+ behind the jbeam .. which.............makes u think 10 + yards aint a lot. but its about full iron yea?

horses for courses.

i like them all a lot.

ryoma =most consistant

jbeam= longest big shots

kamui= overall prefered driver.

this was pretty definitive for me.

as i had the full gamut of good / average / horrible driving over 5 days on seriolsuly top notch tracks.

if i had to have just one.............

im mad bec i SHUD take the ryoma........

but ilike the kamui better.

The Ryoma doesn;t seem to be getting much love from you supo. I think the level of your game judging from you index does not need the key attribute of forgiveness of the Ryoma.

incorrect on all fronts....

the ryoma IS the best driver for me IF i want to consistantly hit drives about 260-270yards... which on most course is perfectly ideal........,

the tracks i play HERE IN JAPAN tho..., tho are all over 7000 yards and most about 7200 yards. so the extra 15 + yards every dive makes things a lot more advantageous to me. thats 1 less club into the green

rememberi play match play not stableford or stroke.. so a big bomb to me is worth a LOT of pressure and a lot of cash over 18 holes hence my never ending desire to find the " big un......"

in oz i play the ryoma /Gd p9003x 44inch most of the time in comp. bec its so straight ,heavy and reliable.

but the course is 6200 yards.. thast a HUGE differnce.

in japan i try and go extra looooooooooong as that is my competitive advantage over my partners.

for hitting friways more than most its the ryoma.

and its easily the ryoma.

heres another thing.... craig has his trusty ryoma with a ly01 and he hits his so much straight down the pipes its BORING...!

in melb... he was hititng his a LOT lower than me and getting the ball to run a mile.

when i was gettign all air time with the kamui and i was behind him on a heap of drives i thought id plowed into the wild blue yonder.

time for ponderage.. bec the pros are after massive air time to get distance but it was very evident that the same hole his drive as longer than me with roll.

that totally confused me.

Quick update after yesterday

Epon 1 Craig Zero

Sweet spot on this thing similar to the female G spot. Even scientists debate its existence.

And I cant find either

Perhaps you're not 'hitting it' hard enough.

Wonder where the Yammie and Zero fit in this list…?

Great insight as always, Stew. I really think it's a lost day without being able to read one of your posts. Must try these Ryomas... must do so soon. Next year is waiting!

  • 2 weeks later...

jbeam 435 9*-- graphite design bb7s... 45 inch 315 ish weight(?) not exact bec the weight i changded in the back are all PROBABLY 2 grams each so the head is about 195 ish all up id hink... so 50 for grip and 70 for shaft yea 315 +/- a tiny bit..,

played in conjunction with a newly built yonex ezone 9* with diamana stigner S flex... that was way heavier 329.5gram

first the jbeam..,

i had this originally with a crazy cb50 8.2 weighted in back to206 gram.

needless to say.. centered shots withthis were monstrous. off cnetred went nowhere far to heavy far far too heavy for my liking.

flight was crazy low .

so instead of toning it down.. i thught why not go the whole hog and go uber light.

id had a few range sesions with ti with some mixed results , wasnt sold on it, but as we al know that means nisssh .. range schange.., match play is what determines how a club really goes under pressure

well this was a MUCH bigger pleaasnt surprise than i thought it was going to be.

the flight was NOTICEABLY higher, but still on the low side.

my head speed was significenat increased and off centered shots went MUCH MUCH better and longer.

the good shots i got i killed but of bec of the swing weight which i think cudnt have been much heavier than c9.. .... i got it to draw , but i was aiming completley worng bec id never drawn it before..,

yup a beautiful baby draw..

so i figure the shaft in it suits magnicicently.. its a superb match, just a wee bit more flex. gives the head the ability move a bit. and really sling the bal ...left... i stil cant believe i did this

the weights in the back are JUST a bit too light , i think ill re do this to 320ish gram and this im guessign this will be about perfect.

the feeling is noticebaly "thiner" at impact at curent conditions.than previous set ups which is SO SO SO SO dissapointing with this driver bec i have no reservations now in sayin this IS the kahoona of kahoonas for distance. only JUST over the kp-x but it is..

the ball flight was MUCH better new than previosusly .

but still on the low side.. way way to low for most guys likes i think, but i like low flight. im used to low flight.. this new soaring style im working on is unnatrural to me it was nice to go back to basics..

the 9* i think IS too low a loft for this club as a genral thought... for pretty much most guys.. this really is a low laucnher. but . i have it for wind and i need JUST a bit more weight in it to get my tempo perfect.its a hell of a build but just a bit of modifying will def make this better.

distance overall was awsome. it was def longer than the yonex.

yonex was great can work this and rely on it thstigner amtch is terrific,.. fallen in love with mr yonex all over again.. cud have done with JUST a bit lighter to get better distance tho

(why the hell they built that new thing is beyond me! the nextage is miles better than the 380...)

for MY SWING SPEED at 47/48 mp/s- ..., the jbeam gdbb7s i can for see as a mgic stick.. with a wee bit more weight to about 320ish i think will make this perfect.. but how to do that with 3 weight ports...,

thinking needed. but well worth it. i just wont be mixing this driver with a heavy one ever again..!

if u want a new shaft for a jbeam,, the th bb WORKS AND FEELS VERY VERY GOOD.

yea.. def 2 thumbs up fo this baby..

stew, how does the bb-7s feel/play compared to the ad-di7...because i absolutely HATE that shaft!

Have you tried the Quadra FEX? I find that much better than the Crazy RD and LY02 both of which I have owned and played. the FEX is a more stable and consistent shaft I find with a tighter dispersion and no distance loss.

no, but that is a shaft i was interested in before i tried the crazy. i have the rd in my ryoma but really liked the ly-02 in the 435. it's been a while since i was looking, what are it's characteristics compared to the ly-02?

the bb is nothing like the di what so ever.

its not like any GD haft ive played its feels totally differrent.

im a prettty big fan of it inadvertanly ive manged to find my self with about 3 of them in diffent pieces.

one in my egg spoon, one in this driver , 2 in yamaha tour drivers.

yea they are good.

the quadra fex i absolutely love ............... when im not hitting fades.

I think the RD in the Ryoma is a good match due to the lower launch and spin characteristic of the Ryoma heads. If only the RD was better dispersion wise, it would be a great shaft. Compared to the LY02, I find the RD feels much better and less dead than the LY-02. It could be down to weight of the shaft and torque I thought but then I tried the FEX which is in a similar weight category and and slightly less torque than the LY02 and it plain feels and outperforms for me. I know there are a lot of Crazy fans here but I have tried a few different models of Crazy shafts and with the exception of the RD, they seem to have a dead feel to me relative to the FEX. Just me of course and feel is very individual and subjective.

LY02 is described as a mid kick shaft while FEX 55 is described as low kick but I find that the FEX55 launches a tad lower which is my liking and seems to have a stiffer tip which I like as well. As I mentioned earlier, the FEX is just a lot tighter for me dispersion wise but not shorter on average than the LY02. I have also hit some of my longest drives ever with the FEX 435 combo.

i have noticed that i can play the fire expresss in a flex DOWN.............. not up like i previously thought, and i get much better results. its longer its bit whipier but thast good beci i can get my hands thru the ball aqnd not slice as much......,

the 75s ive had sensational results with since coming down flex.... i just need it on a head thats closed..

oh the kamui por kp-x............. with this shaft it was scary long. but i had it in the wrong head 9.5* open for me = utter disaster!

10* closed and this wil ltake some equalling

well if crazy doesn't step up and warranty the shaft then i'll move on to another brand or if they do i might just put the fex in my kamui ray. any comparisons between the standard fex and proto?

veyr dioffernt shafts the proto was lower and a much tighter feel. very veyr tight.

i think i liked the original better.. but the proto was prob a better sutied shaft, it dint seem to go as far right on misses as the FEX.

but he FEX is just a ledgend shaft for feel. i think i f i had no predeliction to slicing id prob only play the FEX
