Filling driver head with foam

Recommended Posts

The sound the club face makes has a big effect on how a club feels. Saw these videos today of some JDM drivers that were filled with foam beads. Personally I like the deadened sound, especially with the Crazy435

On The Screw with foam

Crazy435 with foam

There are a few others.

Thanks for sharing. The first video caption said TRPX without form. My ex-TRPX (S & D) both were much louder and more disturbing to me. Unfortunately forming service was not available to me at the time.

I'm pretty sure this foam addition was an at home modification. Hot Melting is a process available by some professional club makers. Hot melting does the same kind of thing.

Do the foams effect in anything else apart from the sound?

The hot melting is used to had weight. its a glue that's like tree sap and remains pliable. But those foam beads.. I don't think he added more than a tablespoon worth. I can't imagine it weighed much at all.

For sure anything added to the head will carry a weight penalty. Taylor Made used to add foam to their burners way back when metal woods were first introduced by them to make the heads equal or reasonably approach the weight of wood heads, thereby making the transition less of a stress of changes for players. If you cut one of those old metal woods you'll see the foam inside.

I've been putting pulled cotton in my 435's for a while. I love the "thud" sound it makes now over just about anything. And I used to think the 435 was the second worst sounding head behind the TM RBZ.

It's probably just camera angle and the quality of strike - and I wish i could have either trajectory, my ball would be so high almost out of frame - but I though the trajectory with the foam installed driver was more desirable.

where can you get the foam in the states?

I recall way back when I was in grade school in the States a chemist from some company came to encourage some of us to become chemists. One of his attention getters was to mix a couple of chemicals that very quickly expanded into foam. I'm thinking the chemicals should be reasonably available and, even if I do not know what they were, some chemistry teacher ought to be able to look them up or figure it out. The reaction came with a very strong smell that filled the room.

Caution. If you try this out, be sure you do it right the first time because there is no second try unless you have heads to spare. It's way easy to put it in but I think just impossibly difficult to take it out.
