mightyva
New guy question, currently gaming 714 AP2's with USt Recoil 95 Proto. I want to order a new set ....more power more forgiveness, in a good feeling and good looking mid size package. Considering the Epon 703 (tested indoors quite well), new 2014 Titleist VG3 (have no knowledge of this club, is it any different vs AP2?) and the new Srixon 545 looks promising on paper. Shaft of choice would be the Recoil Proto 95, Fuji MCI 100 or Diamana Thump. Any thoughts or input on the above choices would be appreciated, or suggest alternatives. 4 index, 82 mph 6 iron speed, carry 6 iron 165-70 yards off the tee. Key words...power ball speed forgiveness looks feel mid size shape....
+TourSpecGolfer
All three irons are made at the same place (ENDO) of S20C IMO the VG3 is the best of the bunch, as it's one of the few irons with an undercut that feel very soft, I also like it's forgiveness and distance compared to the other two. The real question is what is more important to you, look, feel, forgiveness, distance, or the perfect blend. You can go either direction but the Z545 and AF703 are on the clicker side and based on the experience of our members and my own time the VG3 kinda checks all the boxes. 2014 VG3 - softest feel of 3 - 2nd best setup - tied with 703 for best distance - Interesting thick top line / minimal offset design Epon 703: - clickier feel than the other 2 - largest of the 3 - longest of the 3 - most offset of the 3 Srixon 545 - best setup of all 3 - least forgiving - shortest distance of 3 - most workable of
mightyva
great feedback thanks. I guess I'm wondering if the VG3 is marked difference from the 714 AP2 usa model in terms of ball speed dist and power. Epon 703 agree with you, it was somewhat loud and clicky inside the hitting bay. How does the size of the VG3 compare to the USA Titliest AP2 AP1 or Mizuno USA 850 Forged? thx very much
+TourSpecGolfer
The VG3 is nothing like the AP2, totally different design nothing is borrowed. I'm not too familiar with USDM models so I can't comment on size but the lofts are stronger on the VG3 for more distance. Power? That's up to you :) Ball speed I can't really comment as well. My favorite thing about the VG3 is it's feel and forgiveness, I also think it's got just the right amount of offset and the slightly thicker top line I see as a bonus not a flaw. stevopagolf
I have had the VG3's for 4 years. They sit right between the AP1 and AP2 as far as size and appearance. WAAAAY easier to play than the AP2. I had a set of AP2's a few years back prior to getting the VG3. Less offset than the AP1. They feel great super easy to launch. I tweaked the lofts 2* weaker to get better distance gaps as they are strong lofted as Chris mentioned. Very easy transition from AP2 to VG3 same great forged feel and much easier to use. My VG3's are 4 years old and for forgings they look fantastic. Great quality from Titleist Japan

Also, what is the difference between the VG3 Forged and VG3 Type-E Forged? Thank you.
