Iron addiction!

Current 3 sets of irons: Epon 503, Wishon 560mc, and Macgregor 1025mc (blade 7-w, cb 5-6). The Macgregors are in India where my business is and the others in the US where home is. (long commute!)

My swing is really looking good these days, best ever. I don't get to play much in India but can practice and even with the rocks at the range, I am loving the feel of a blade compressing the ball. And starting to feel great about my ball striking. (don't tell the golf gods i said that)

So...Time for the best blades. A lot of work over several years is paying off and I want a set of blades to celebrate. At least for the short irons (7-w).

I'm no masochist, so I don't want the tiniest head and smallest sweet spot on the planet. Some designs seem so thin that I think it's totally all or nothing. Don't usually enjoy stinging hands!

Elegant look, top line, look at address, bag appeal, solid feel, reasonable sole design. The look that has caught my eye is the Honma World Tour M/V and Miura 5005/5003.

But you guys know jdm and I am a rookie. What are the best feeling, most elegant looking irons with a little sensibleness for the 5 index player?

Right now, based on that description. I think simple is the most elegant and would have to say the Epon Personal 2nd edition... I believe it is only 4-P no other option. Also depends on whether a set is available somewhere...

Be sure and check out the Yamaha 2014 RMX Tour MB. Fits all your qualifications and plays with super feel.

I think Ian has a set for sale, or at least know someone who does.

Epon Personal 1's are superb feeling and not demanding to hit. I soft stepped mine 1x in Monaco's to get back the distance loss the heads tend to produce for most people. There's a set of heads only on BST as well.

Having hit both, P2 is far superior to P1...

Needmoregolf,

Am curious how soft stepping got you distance back, unless you are playing them longer as well...

Longer club essentially. I haven't hit both on a TM or anything w/ specific accuracy and hard numbers, but can tell at my usual range that I'm definitely hitting them longer than when I went straight in.

All the feedback has been the P2's are really great (more so than most expected) and thats good news as it goes back on the radar for things to try =) Any specifics you would say make them better?

The P1 was too soft and I lost 1.5 club lengths along with too spinny and a tad chunky for my taste. The P2 is more flexible with spin, sleeker all around and dense feeling as well as being average in the distance dept.

Mind you I have only played a 7 iron, but other than the grip it is built with the same shaft and spec sans lie angle. Also I had it on course and played probably 65 shots, at least, in that round with it.

Someone else said it, they did themselves a disservice by naming it the P2, too much baggage came with it.

WELL short of getting the entire set the only ones i can think of are miura, vega and epon?

for the short irons i had several combo sets comprising of CB and Mb. most recent were the af tours.

i like the new miura neo blade. looks real nice

Feel is a funny thing. After I wrote the post, I realized 'soft' isn't the key thing. I don't really like the feel when you barely know the club hit the ball. I prefer what I guess is called 'dense' or solid. I am surprised the epons are seen as easy (not that I know much about them). Their picture on epon site looks pretty daunting.

I suppose I like something that in the 5-6 iron with a little cavity back that works with the 7-w. But not 100% about that.

Thx.

Spoon, would you elaborate? How did you build cm/mb sets? Did you like this setup?

this was several years ago. did these with my Epon 302 CB 4567, Epon aftour blades 89pw

I liked the setup it was close to perfect but being an enthusiast i soon after sold it and have been

going around circles since.

i know a lot of other guys that did the same with their Romaro irons, Miura irons and mizuno. combination

of cbs and Mbs. may want to check the proshop to see if you can build a set or better yet just buy single irons.

miura giken come to mind. i tried buying romaro singles but from what i know you must buy the whole set at least 5-pw

Haha, how many times have we sold something we wish we had. I am keeping the irons I have - all 3 do what they do very well.

From something someone posted, I. think some of 5005/5003 Miura are kind of designed to be matched together. I am also toying with the idea of all hybrids above the 6 or 7. It sounds logical but I am not sure I can tolerate the look.

thx...

A lot of you guys like the personals. I believe you re ease of hitting but man they look thin. Maybe it's the offset? Face design looks like they would be clangers.

Dude just buy some used AF Tours to try out. If you don't like them then sell them on and you won't lose any cash

Well, back to reality. The more I think about it, the more I know blades would only be a passing fancy. How many blades have I owned over my lifetime, only to sell ASAP because they simply are too.... blade-like. I am just going to let my wonderful Macgregor's satisfy this need and not spend $2K on a set that will sit in the corner. As much as like many of us I lust for blades, I just know how this story plays out. Been there, done that too many times and even with my much improved swing, I don't create a quarter-sized wear mark that blades require.

crazy MBs are the best in my humble opinion. I repeat, I want to be buried with them when I die (wishfully on a golf course so that my friends can visit me every weekend!) :tsg_smiley_skull:

  • 2 weeks later...

Recently purchased the Miura 5005 and it is fantastic! That great unique Miura feel (a soft dense feeling) and more forgiving than I had imagined. It glides through the grass and is extremely accurate.

I just received 2014 rmx cb's in the mail. Alas I am in India 2 more weeks before I can get home to see them.

What shaft are you playing in your MB5005?
