chuck4golf
Every time I come to India, where I keep an old set of Macgregor 1025 mb, I fall in love with them again. So I have a new set of heads at home lying around that I am going to shaft up and play. Being an old buzzard, I usually put graphite in irons. But with a classic set of blades, it might be right to use steel. What do you think? Steel? Graphite? What feels best to you when you hit it pure? RLL33
Fuji MCI composites. Long, accurate, soft.
+TourSpecGolfer
Love carbon in blades, my preference is MCI 100 and up.
Shankopotamus
Fuji MCI composites. Long, accurate, soft. Yup, another fantastic option.
chuck4golf
OK.. graphite in a landslide. There's something very appealing to me about the 1025 heads. Salt of the earth kind of heads. Useable. Solid. Then matched with very nice shafts - like paying respect - feels very cool.
Craig
Wow old Macgregors They made some nice irons. I am not that familiar with them but at the moment I am hitting a set of Nicklaus Muirfields. I like them a lot.
chuck4golf
Craig, there are just some clubs that click for you. That's what these do for me. Love the look at address. They look like tools you could use to build a house or repair a plane. Just fundamentally right. I had a set of Muirfields back in the day. Now, these were some butterknives. A sweetspot about the size of a politician's candor.
RLL33
I was in Roger Dunn superstore the other day and was surprised to see a new set of irons from Macgregor sitting on the rack with all the other big names... Nobody working there could tell me anything about them.
chuck4golf
I thought Macgregor was a house brand for Golfsmith now....guess not. Long way from the Muirfield days. I *think* I had their 1-iron. Either the Muirfield or a Staff 1-iron. Either way, that was as delusional a fantasy as I ever knew. My fingers and wrist feel a jarring just writing this. I bet I never hit one solid shot ever with that beast. Head high slices that made me want to drink heavily is my recollection.
chuck4golf
I put some Recoils I had lying around in these Mac heads. Mainly just practiced with them. Will start playing them this week. In a word, wow. What a delight to hit. I see a little drop off on my miss which is thin. But well struck balls are awesome in every way. Long, high, with incredible feel. If I can take them to the course successfully, this changes everything. I will focus entirely on blades. And there are so many SWEET JDM blades. Mjr. D
I have recoils in my 302s and although they perform excellently, I find the feel is muted.
chuck4golf
So far, this combo has the best feel on a good strike of anything I've played. My last 3 sets were Yamaha tour cb, miura cb-2007 and epon 502. This is sweeter feel than any of these. The main thing is if blades don't injure scoring too dramatically, then there's a whole world of fantastic options to consider.
kc720
Without a doubt graphite. Steelfiber in my baby blades and matrix f15 in z945. The right graphite shaft beats steel any day IMO

All comes to fitting and preference. My wrists thank me with graphite though
mpbachman
I love my MCIs, somewhat a blend of both qualities. I would be eager to try the Recoils but some good NSPro shafts are almost just as smooth if they fit you :)
RLL33
MCIs for me. I didn't get along with Recoils. MCIs more lively like steel, only smooth, without the vibration.
chuck4golf
RLL, are you now not playing the Yamaha's? The main thing about blades is they are ... finicky and seem to reflect the reality of impact more vividly. Subtle stuff is more amplified. The conclusion I am reaching is you really have to dial them in with more precision. But wow are they fun to play. I think I am blades-only from now on. Once I settle in on heads (and frankly I can't imagine switching from the Mac's but I have felt this way before only to see that vanish because of a shift in unseen ethers) then the shafts are next. I wish there was some way to assess a shaft with a head systematically.
RLL33
Still play the RMX's, Chuck -- "when the ether shifts," as you so well put it. <g> But I picked up this beautiful set of OnOff CB's refinished in copper by Ant, and you know me, I just loves me copper...! <g> Also, they're just so buttery soft, I love the feel at the moment. Interestingly, and in line with your comments, I only hit the Yamahas any time I go to the range for practice, where I find blades really hone my stroke best. Don't think I'd ever be without a set. chuck4golf
When I decided to get these blades, I had thought I'd use them like you do, for practice. But I had to play them just for kicks and then I fell for them. I had to look the on-offs up and saw a set of coppers. Very very nice. RLL33
Yeah, they're sweet, been meaning to post a pic of the summer bag as I'm really pleased with everything at the moment.
chuck4golf
Were the coppers used or NOS? I think there's something really cool in finding something retro and then doing them up right. The core element is the head design itself - sole design, how the weight is distributed, size, offset, etc. Then once this feels very right, do them up with all the respect they deserve. So the copper is a finish to the original? I bought Chris's Yamaha CB that were finished in a deep brown that I really like the look of as the finish wears. It gets kind of burnished look. But I am thinking there is something different between this and what was done to your heads. Can you briefly explain what was done? thx... RLL33
Chuck, I got the OnOff's here on the BST from a mate down under. He had them refinished in the copper. Here are some pics that I finally got to snap yesterday of the whole bag.
