Epon 901 vs 903

Want to add a 3 iron for some courses, I do like my 915h but don't hit it any straighter than driver off the tee. I like the looks of 903 more but couldn't find many reviews when running a search. Only thing giving me pause is 901 looks easier to hit high. I've been smashing 302 4 iron off tee recently, am I correct in assuming 903 isn't as easy to hit as 901 but should be plenty easy for me? Other DI's I'm considering are 712u, Srixon, TEE, or a 5 series Epon 3 iron bent a little strong.

You guys are a bad influence but I like the sound of 903 20*~302 4/5 ~ P2 6-P ~ 210 52/56.

Hey bro

I have been on this boat for awhile and most recently picked up a 903 23 4i replacement and won't go back to a long iron as the forgiveness factor just can't be beat

Also dabbling with 901 and I'm on the fence 901 is longer and more forgiving but has more offset and tends to be hooky with an over the top swing.

The 903 although less offset is not as forgiving.

if you are a scratch golfer and have no issues hitting the 302 4i, then the 903 should not be any issue either. I would say that the 903 is a tad easier to hit than the titleist 712u

Are you guys talking about the same "903?"

AF-903 and AF-903HYB are two different things. Yeah, I think Epon lost track of their product names.

http://www.one2one.jp/epongolf/epon_main.html

I have the 903HYB in 20 and 23 which are successor to the 902 .

The 903 is the succesor to the 901 driving iron.

The main reason I switched from 902 to the 903HYB is in fact due to the occasional hooks I got with the 902.

With less offset, I can still hit draws with the 903HYB but no more nasty hooks. :-) and the forgiveness is still there.

think he's referring to the 903DI.

if your a scratch golfer then i would suggest the 903di over the 901.

Gaming the 903 driving iron 23 and 20

Bended the 23 to 21, and the 20 to 18.

Keeps the dispersion tight. won't change for a long while

I haven't hit the 903, but have been using and loving my 19deg 901 since not long after getting my AF-301 irons - so it must be more than 6 or 7 years of use without any likelihood of ever being replaced... Unless Epon agree to make one in copper chrome for me, ha.

I too like the 4 iron, and since it's 23 deg the 19 degree 901 fits very well - i actually had it made 1 inch longer than the 4 iron rather than my usual 1/2", and i used the exact same steel shaft i use and like in the rest of my irons.

The Epon US page also seems to recommend using your normal steel shaft rather than some lighter graphite, and i can confirm it works great.

Here in Thailand, the previous Epon distributor Golfcraft does not carry them any more - seems Epon are looking to keep it in house in Thailand by setting up their own shop in Thaniya Plaza. Imhaven't been to see how far that's got but curious to see how they change things elsewhere...

This is interesting as there are at least 2 shops in Thaniya that carry Epon products.

So far, i only hear great things about the 903s...

I was there 2 days ago and only saw Epon (new) at Art Of Golf. And they carried quite a lot of different brands, like Seven, Miura, Epon. So not Epons own place. And, I feel, pretty damn expensive too. I also saw a newly opened shop right where you enter Thaniya from the BTS, and they had Buchi.

Yes, i am pleasantly surprised to see Buchi too!

To add, clubs at Thaniya were never known for their prices.

Its a place where JDM and USDM Golf is on exhibition!

IMO 901 are much better a lot easiesr to hit and longer, the 901 has the cavity and clicker then the 903.

The 901 change my long iron game use to play 19 and 22 but you can do anything with these things high low left right.

So dropped the 19 and got a 902 18 and have been enjoying that too.

903 is not a bad club at all still great, looks a lot more the business.

Although I've never even seen an AF903 in person, I can't imagine beating the 901.

My previous driving irons have include an Eye 2 1-iron, a Dunlop rip-off of the PRGR 200i, a Mizuno Fli-Hi, a Cleveland Halo, and a hickory shafted Louisville. The Epon AF901 hiccups noticeably fewer times than any of those.

Nothing is more frustrating than flubbing a driving-iron shot. All you're looking for is an ugly line drive that ignores the cross-breeze, goes through the narrow corridor, and finds a relatively flat patch of short grass so that you can now attempt a somewhat more heroic second shot. Flub that, and you could have done that with your driver.

For me, the 901 hits straight shots that land hot. It's not as good as a Heavenwood for hitting protected greens on a long par 3 because it doesn't descend vertically enough. Run-on possibilities, however, are a different story.

As a senior, I don't hit long irons from the fairway, but from the tee box, with a broken tee pushed all the way down to its cup, the 901 seriously outperforms everything else that I've ever tried. The newer 903 may possibly be as good, but I can't imagine it being better.

Funny way to describe what we look for out of a DI but spot on! I think as a tee club only I can handle the 903 and I won't be hitting it much from the ground. I play a couple courses where I bet a DI that carries ~200 will roll another 50, my hybrid isn't really any more consistent than driver. I'll take the DI out in the spring and fall when it gets cold/wet.

Anyone have one? Just missed on BST.
