parputt
Can anyone offer any comparisons on the 580 Tour (not XD) vs the 540DF or 540XD?Any opinions on overall performance.
haribo
Both are 400cc big, both are exceptional good clubheads, the 540xd is overhyped and expensive, while the 580 tour is now available for little money. What it comes down to is are you willing to pay for hype? If you'd ask me I'd take the 580 tour anyday over the xd. JMHO, haribo
VokeyMan
I have to disagree saying the 540xd is overhyped. It was the 2nd most played driver at Bay Hill behind the 510 DF. These drivers and the original 540 DF never really got the respect they deserved for being such great drivers. The 580 Tour and 540 XD Tour are both great choices and most likely better than the Low spin 510 DF that takes a special player to use effectively. mosesgolf
I'm currently playing the 540DF w/ TP 757x. For me, it works better than the 5 R580 Tours that I've tried w/ various shafts. Hits about 1/2 deg higher than stated loft. Mine's a 7.5. For me it's the straightest driver I've tried thus far and distance is up there w. everything else. I recently got another R580 Tour w/ xstiff Fuji 660TR 8.5 but due to an injured wrist can't play golf for a month. :( Sucks. Will do a comparo when I've recovered. If you want to get a 540DF at a reduced price, get the original prototype w/ no XD next to the R540 but w/ the loft underlined. (This is the one I have). They are the exact same club. This one is the R540 XD DF http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&category=18953 This one is the R540 DF http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&category=47334 THEY ARE EXACTLY THE SAME EXCEPT FOR THE XD DENOTATION. Note the underlined loft. The R540DF usually sells for a lot less.
haribo
The second link takes you to one of Bighitter's auctions. That would be enough reason for me not to bid on it. Even if it's slightly cheaper than the xd version. Btw, I play a 510 tour issue, the 350cc one. Very underrated but nevertheless one of the best drivers I've ever played. I'm happy with it and don't need to spend more money on bigger and better clubs anyway. haribo

Besides that auction is over and I posted the link to show the pics. Nevertheless it's an awesome club imo. I like the 540DF more than any of TM Tour drivers I've tried. Come to think of it, I've had all the TM Tour issued drivers ever released and this R540DF is my favorite.
haribo
I didn't mean it's a bad club just because you know who is selling it. Great if the club works for you. Nothing wrong with that. I only meant to say that there's a lot of hype around everything tour and new from TM. But frankly, most of the tour issues are good and one doesn't need to spend big bucks every time. Plus with the release of the next best thing (r7 is already around the corner) the prices will take a dive anyway. Not a good investment in my opinion. (I'd rather go for high end fuji's ;) I believe if you got a tour club from TM that you like stick with it. I doubt there's too much of a diff anyways unless of course you need more forgiveness. But most people buy into the hype of the next new magic wand. You seem to have the money to throw towards TM. So, enjoy the club until you have the urge to buy a r7 tour issue .... haribo
MIura5001
I've hit both and prefer the 580 Tour over the 540DF. For me, the 580 Tour hit a flatter ball and felt much more solid. The 540DF hit the ball very high, imparted a lot of spin, and had little to no roll out after it landed. I was hitting the 540DF about 10-15 yards shorter than I hit the 580 Tour. I think the 540DF is a great club for a low ball hitter. For the money, the 580 Tour is a super good value. I actually like this head over the 580XD Tour as well. mosesgolf
I've read that the R540DF has more spin than some of the other TM Tour drivers. I havn't experienced it but then again maybe it's because I have the 7.5*. Haribo, in all honesty the TM Tour drivers aren't longer per say than any other driver w/ similar setups. It seems to work for harder swingers or for people who don't like the left side as they are not closed faced like most retail drivers. In fact, the longest driver I've ever hit is the retail 983E. The 540DF is more forgiving and comparably close in distance. Overhyped? Perhaps but it's a driver that's working for me at the moment. There's a course in So.Cal called Oak Quarry which can be a pretty tough driving course. Havn't broke 80 from the tips but played the 540DF for the first time over there and shot 3 over. The driver pretty much kept me in play the whole day. Missed only 2 fairways. That pretty much did it for me. Ahh yes the 510 Tour. A sleeper that doesn't get the "hype" that it deserves. ;)
haribo
Moses, As i said already, if it works for you great. Btw, with that I don't mean just distance. Who gives a damn if a driver is 10 yards longer when you can't keep it in the fairway. The reason I like the 510 tour issue is simple. It's square faced and with it's 350cc not too huge in size. Not totally crazy about those toasters on a stick. I might try a 400cc head one day but that's about as big as it will get for me. Frankly, if I would like the looks of the 983's I probably would play them. haribo
slicktry
I think I would take the tour 580....I personally think it produces a better ball flight, but then again, I just got a Kasco DNA, so who am I to speak? Jer
