JPN putters..,

Featured Replies

Nowadays , I spend much more of my time on the putting range and on short game chipping, piching practice than bombing drivers relentlessly and smacking irons into the concrete under fake grass mats.
Dont get me wrong , i still love to blast the bejeeeeesssaaahhzzzzz out range rocks with the big dawgs but my elbow says NO more than yes these days.
As a result , my collection of wedges and putters has ..................grown , while my hoards of irons and woods have somewhat stabilized......,

There is nothing more treasure trove hunting wise i love more than to find a great cond. exotic JPN flatty.

All the ususal top names are stil very well sought after , Yamada, Hiro mats, Benock,Fujimoto,( (who ever makes for miura ) ,Odyssey Jpn, but ive added a lot of OEM putters of yore recently , Tourstage, mizuno, prgr yamaha, honma, and a few bespoke guys, Docus, masda, (seven), Buchi......

some of the OEMS stuff have surprisingly good charm if u look hard /long enough and while not bespoke, they are made of the right stuff , feel great and play great.
they just arnt as special as a singular piece.

Cpl of snaps to get the ball rolling...

I love seeing other people’s collections but I literally quit buying putters after the Epon Zen. I actually feel sorry for guys that I see with their next putter every 6 months and can’t find that “one”!

I lied, I’ve bought two putters since the Zen came out. A second Zen just in case and an actual proto carbon steel blade putter from Sam the owner of LAB. Never used either one of these on the course.

There is NO such thing as " the one", there is the '100"............. in my book.
the top is one of my latest added , have added a few ODA's to the bags lasy few yrs. and am having a tough time taking them out at game time. they all have wonderful balance and a distinctive feel to them that i LOVE, deep resonating feel. milling is ultra light which is now my preferd style.
these ones are a cpl ive picked up from OEMS, honma and mizuno copper.

The honma SLN i thought was better than the scotty tei3 i used to have , very similar in most ways so i sold the cameron , kept this one.
i have a full steel set of HONMA "ancients" for play , iron ,wedge, putters i take out , fabulous gear( the old stuff).
this has a more angluar look feel it , very squared, obv copper insert is magic.

the mizuno LN is SOFT SOFT SOFT ,very light like mid 400g. i tend to play these light putters , on the fastest greens to try keep the ball somehwere near the hole. this milling is quite mild which i prefer these days so it gives it just a bit more ting in the fingers at impact.

This yonex ezone mallet has beenway more than just a peach recently. .
A tad head heavy in hand , dense full body impact with full deep milling the super compact head has acutally usurped its competitors (with the same shape.. ie.. the TS, the benock and the miura,) for a regular bag spot .

Where as say the Miura has a very light super direct charcter and excell on slower grassier lies and the benock is very firm, very fast off the face, or the toursatge which is a medium get what u put into it results , vs the yonex, is all about distance control, its so good at getting to the pin, i was using it on the weekend on greens and the way the ball just stops dead to about where its a tap in is why im baggin it at the moment.
i was going head ot head vs the others mentioned here so its not random, all of them ahd thier better bits but over all the way th e ball jsut dies at the hole is the reason. if im honest , as much as the others in its category are regraded more Highly(????) i wud be hard presed not to take this one.
-the TS is a wonder full all rounder, played a bit upright it simply does tis job, i cant see any big plus' or negatives on it. its just a great piece on any green.
-the benock has a feel that is only benock user can understand, its like no other, the ball almost repels off the face as soon as it hits, its SO dense but.. its light in the hands at the same time , its really hard to adequatly ilustrate in words, i love it on slow greens where i need to get a bit handiser to get the ball there.
but for me.. at this stage this yonex has game time prowess most times. loving it, oh and it looks awosme, that cord grip really hs my attention im even getting a cpl more .

TOURSTAGE mallet pv5
this one, was desgined , made and THEN refurbed by KITADA.
for me as a bday present, re milled it with a non glare matt sheen.
its WAS my all rounder for all conditions but its now definitely best on faster greens with the shaft /grip combo ive gone for , thicker leather gripasmter to take more hands out if it, on slow greens i tend to leave it sort but when it get s quick this SHINES.!
on the larger side for a mallet with a high face and thicker top line i tend t oplay this more upright with a pendulm swing .
feel is crisp and instantaneous, immediate response on where the ball was stuck.
ive 3 of this type of head shape all with slightly differnt characteristics.
this and the miura for fast, the yonex and benock for slower.

purpousely gripped them all different for diff greens/ days/feels.
this not in play at the moment, the greens are too slow but when a dry winter comes down under , this will get a lot of play .
as a guide WE get :
slow s stimp peed 8.7-9.4
mid a 9.5-10
fast 11-11.5 , ive not seen many faster than 11.5 aprt for mthe days afte a tournament , i thnk th quickest igot was 12. . AND.. for a WEEKEND chopper ............. thats FOOKEEEN rapid!
