Gauge Design BLACK review

So here goes...after 3 range sessions and 2 course sessions I think I've got a good feel for these irons. Tell me what you guys think about paintfills. Should I take out all the paintfill and just leave the Gauge logo or leave the logo, and the letters G D. Red paintfill anyone??

Forgiveness: These are where the GD's really shine. As you have heard on numerous occasions, the GD's are the most forgiving player's CB's and probably not far from the most forgiving clubs I have ever played. I had my friend bring his cally x-16's and I brought one of my more forgiving irons the mizuno tour spirit MT's. Not as forgiving as the Cally's but then again who wants to lug around shovels in their bags. Definetly more forgiving than the RAC CB's and MR23 Blades (need i comment on this one?) Great on heel mis**ts and didnt notice that much dispersion on off center hits. Lower irons are soooooooo easy to hit :wah: 9/10

Distance: With the jacked up lofts these puppies go far. Anyone will immediatly notice a 5-10 or maybe even 15 yard increase. Had my friend test them out and the same thing happened. So if you want to impress the ladies...pull out your 7 iron and bomb it 200 :surprize: no one will ever know that your lofts are actually lower. 10/10

Feel: Here's what most people want to know...does the teflon change the feel of a club? I took these out with my RAC CB's and Tour Spirit MT irons. Both clubs are forged and having previously played the MR23 Blades I'd have to rank 1)MR23 Blades 2)GD Black 3) RAC CB's strictly based on feel. The teflon has a very muted feel just like Chris described. Almost like a great 3 wood thwack (similiar thwack to the Titleist 970 or Kasco KP-99). But definetly one of the best feeling irons I have ever played. No problems with working the ball... fades, cuts, slices :smile2: all on command 9/10

Setup/Look: Having heard complaints about how large the GD CB's were I wasn't that turned off by the size of these irons when I played them. I'd say larger than the RAC CB's but not ridiculously large that it's an eyesore. Having played the mr23 blades, I had no problem adjusting to the size. Like I said before, maybe the black teflon coating makes the irons look more sleek. The irons do have offset which might turn some potential buyers off but nothing ridiculous. More of a progressive offset so if anything, the lower irons will have close to no offset. As you may know, the GD BLack are some sexy looking irons...definetly confidence inspiring. Add to the fact they are damn forgiving...you've got yourself a serious winner here. 9/10

Ball Flight/Trajectory: Play Rifle PX 6.0 at standard lengths. Nice medium high trajectory. Ball does not balloon or hit to low. This category depends alot on swing mechanics and shaft selection. So i won't divulge too much into this section. I knew i wanted the 6.0's...and the GD irons delivered exactly what I was expecting and wanted. 9/10

Durability: I added this because with everything said and done the teflon is still a coating that will wear. I experienced some minor sole scratches from pounding balls at the range. Most likely because those range mats will kill any finish on your clubs. Not to despair though, went to my local paint shop and got some Krylon paint that adheres to plastic. Just mask up the portions you don't want sprayed on voila...pretty much good as new. Overall...very durable finish...my next test is to cook something on it  8/10

WOW! A very insightful and detailed review! Spray painting your irons, now that's a new way to maintain the appearance of your irons. Definitely leave the original paintfill and just keep those soles nice and black with your paint! Thanks HJ!
