Swing Psychology

I am getting really frustrated with my swing... There is such a lack of consistency with my swing from day to day.

I think one of the issues holding me back is I don't know what I should be feeling. What I should be focusing on.

I know there are a lot of these swing pyschology videos, Swing the Shaft... Aj's whatever... you know the ones.

Anyhow are any of them worth a look?

Pete, you need to chill, step back and look at your problem. When you hit a good shot, you're normally target oriented, not focused on mechanics. The zen equivalent is the concept is called "no mind" where execution is perfect and you're hardly aware of the act itself.

That said, concentrate on your set up. If you must think of some part of your swing, I'd focus on the transition at the top of the swing, make it syrupy. If you can maintain your spine angle, you should hit a pretty decent shot.

Most importantly, keep it simple. Trying to do too much will aggravate things. Good golfing! :D

You (and SOOOO many other golfers!) are frustrated because your swing is not sufficient, nor efficient.

Work on your grip. Left hand heel pad on TOP of the club. See two knuckles. Forefinger and thumb pinched together. Right hand lifeline on top of left thumb. Square with the clubface. Forefinger in a trigger position. Two knuckles.

Posture. Athletic. Weight on balls of feet. The club will tend to go where your weight is set at address. Hands hanging from shoulders. Bend from hips about 30 degrees. Knees slightly flexed.

Alignment. Hips, shoulders, eyes, and forearms square with target.

NO MORE TIME!!!

Thanks man... In my living room tonight, with a wedge and some wiffle balls, I worked on my grip. It seemed to actually help a lot with my ball striking, which is my greatest battle.

I missed this post for awhile so sorry for being late on a comment.

There is a point of diminishing returns in trying to work on too many things at one time. Minor adjustments here and there are okay but if you are trying to work on grip, starting the backswing, staying on plane, rotating the hips, stay behind the ball, roll your forearms at impact and get to the high finish all at once it will be a disaster. Try one or two things at the most and focus on them until you find it's second nature, maybe one or two practice sessions and then move on to other changes.

If you want to read some books on the mental aspects of golf then you might try looking at "Zen Golf" or "Mind Over Golf." Both are really good on mental exercises for all types of situations. I've personally found "Zen Golf" to be very helpful and still read through parts to find something new for my game. Some people really like the Dr Rotella books but I find that there was just more anecdotal examples and not enough exercises to work on.

Philly everyone who plays golf goes thorugh that stage, more often than none. what i do when i work with someone on their swing, even mine is... I have them make practice swing with the club slightly off the ground and always look away from the ball. I think 90% of the golfers "freeze up" a lil or alot when they see a golf ball. I would make these swings about 20 times, pref with a heavy club. Then try hitting the ball making the same swing using the same technique. I guarantee after a few swings not only will you hit the ball better but much further. ( you have to trust your self, and the swing you are making)

I am a firm beleiver that many problems in the golf swing start at address. For many golfer, it may feel like they have some good swings and some terrible swings but the same exact swing can produce two different results based on allignment. Take a minute to focus on lining up and when you stand over the ball try to have a single swing thought in mind. Too many swing thoughts can lead to too many problems and itll take for ever to figure out what exactly you are doing wrong.

Pete! You will get through this dude.

I had a lot of issues with feel and repititious thought.

Had to practice alot with a visual and body motion.

The swing was fine, I just had to remember how to finish.

I worked it out by using a golf ball that is cut in half and place a tee flat on the ground about 1 1/2 inches in front of it, tried to get a visual of where to strike the ball and get used to the feeling of hitting the ball first then the ground 2nd which was replicated by swinging at the tee and not the ball.

Once I could repeat the sensation of striking the ball I then just tried to remember to finish on my left side after my swing and try collect the ball with the club head using either iron or driver.

It all came down to feel and very little thought.

The less I thought about golf and tried to maintain a game plan on how to play the course/hole/shot it became much more relaxing and less mechanical.

As we all know in golf, nothing is simple.

I was thinkin go f nothing more than TEMPO TEMPO TEMPO

Best-O-Luck Dawg!

I like most golfers had such a problem.I went to a pro who gave me a drill which has worked wonders. He told me to go in front of a mirror and take a few very slow but fluid swings and to then stay in the proper position and just hold it and shut your eyes, this will help your muscle memory. He told me to do it about 3-5 times.Another thing I just read in golf illustrated is to think of a word that just frees your mind, this helps take your mind off the mechanics during the swing.

--Junior has a good point, I personally play to a 1.7 index at my local track, im not sure you are where I am at in golf, but i feel most if not all problems for me stem from lack of posture, spine angle, knees bent, make sure your shoulders are also square to the target, this will take someone standing behind you to properly feel this and to analyze it.. also it helps in my backswing, i look in a mirror, find the spot where my club is parallel to my target, and keep that in my muscle memory (make myself remember what it feels like) and when im on the range, when i hit that point in the backswing, its automatic that its coming down from there, like it hits a switch, i dont know if any of that made any sense, its hard to explain good feel.

Most golf psychology stuff is junk . This guy has a proven method for getting you off manual conscious thinking mode and onto automatic habit mode when playing shots. Carey Mumford is a nice guy and works with Touring Pros. His methods work.
