Gauge Design GAF1 Review

Ordered 14* & 18* heads from Chris a few weeks ago and finally got a chance to test them over the past two days.....

The faces set-up pretty square even though they are 0.5 degree open. Size of the head seems large, i've played w/ drivers that are not much bigger, but in-line with current wood offering. Nice looking overall.

Extremely easy to hit...maybe easier than all those new hybrids. I don't see how these were described as geared toward JPGA players somewhere else on this site. Anyone with a half-decent swing should get good results with the right shaft.

Distance is long. 14* carries @235 yds & 18* carries @220 yds with a nice easy swing. Plus they seem to roll forever, maybe an extra 10-15 yds. I'm guessing the head design reduces spin to allow for this??? The 14* could probably replace a driver for big hitters.

Ball flight is medium-high. I usually have a relatively low trajectory with my woods so these give me more of a "normal" flight when not trying to work the ball. No problems hitting draws or fades, really impressed with how well the ball holds its line. Face is deep enough to control height as well.

Feel is hard to describe for these clubs. The face is hot and the ball really takes off but it almost feels like your slinging the ball where you want it to go when your trying to work it. Also, flush hits have a soft & sweet feeling but at the same time the face feels very solid & hard. My best comparison would be a cross between a rc super cv pro and a quality forged iron. Weird???!!!

Finish seems only ok so far, nothing impressive. I've only hit 50 balls with each club and you can definitely see the sweet spot...all scratched up. And the paint chipped a little on the 18* on the heel side leading edge...could keep going. But of course testing was done at a public range where the balls are crappy and the grass tee areas are kinda rough.

9/10 due to the finish only because these clubs are so expensive.

...maybe 10/10 tomorrow depending on how low I shoot :smile2:

Welcome to the Board!

You mention that the size is as big as some drivers that you have played. I currently have a Cally Steelhead III 4+ in the bag and am thinking of replacing it. How would size of the the GAF compare to that or the woods you replaced?

Thanks

I too just got a new GAF1 3 wood from Chris. BTW - turn around time on the order was awesome! Thanks Chris.

I have not hit it, but I will say the HK-80 shaft (S) seems a bit whippy to me out of the box. I understand from Chris that they don't tip the shaft automatically... which for a fairway wood seems odd. I would expect anywhere from a 1/2 inch to 1.5 inch tip for a 3 wood. I plan to hit the club in play on Fri or Sat and will let you all know what I find. I am currently playing a Sonartec SS-07 15 degree with a NV-75 S tipped to play close to a 6.0-6.5 flex and length is 43 inches.

I'm waiting on mine also should have it in a few days  I hit a guys In a tournament I was in, after the round obviously and it was sweet. The club felt real solid with the maraging face and it gave me good feedback on where you hit it on the face. Its a club thats the best of both worlds because it is great for the tee( not to shallow) and not to deep to take away confidence on the fairway. This IMO is a keeper and when you hit on the nut its instant love and I hit about 10 balls with it . I cant wait to get mine play it and give a further review. Hit um well.

It's really not that big compared to current standards. Can't remember how big the Steelhead III is but the GAF seems the same size as pretty much all the new fw's, maybe just a little bigger. I'm just used to playing with clubs that are 10+ years old where an oversized driver is not that much bigger than 200cc. The only callaway i've tested is the gbbII and there is no comparison in terms of feel and workability. Highly recommended!

Great review.

What shafts are in your GAF1?

Fuji Tour Platform 27.3. The first shafts I've had sst pured and they feel great. Even though their the "cheaper" line I don't feel a difference in quality compared to the [sIX] I have in my driver. These heads are kinda light though - I thought a 73 gram shaft would be enough to bring the swingweight up to D2 after looking at the specs but the 14* came out to a D0 and the 18* came out to a C8 (the gauge website has them both at D0 with a 50 gram shaft) :-D Gotta look into epoxy or tungsten weighting...too light.

Do you consider 212-214g light for a head? That is the average weight of a #3 FW and thats what the GAF1 is.

Had no idea what average weights for club heads are but the specs just didn't come out right. I had the shafts (@20 grams heavier than stock) installed to the same length as stock with standard weight grips (@50 grams) and the swingweight came out the same or less. I don't know much about clubmaking but it makes sense more shaftweight = higher swingweight...right? Anyways, nothing that can't be tweaked.
