After playing countless sets of irons over the last couple of years and going back and forth between CBs and blades, I´m looking to make my own combo set.

Is there any company/brand around, where I could get a transition like (PW to 3 iron)

MR23 US Blade -> MR23 US CB -> Z201 -> Z202

Or

MP37 -> MP32 -> MP27

Or is there even a Japanese set of irons that have:

- minimal to moderate offset

- low center of gravity (that´s more important to me than a large size cavity or a large size face)

- wider sole with some bounce and camber (a la MR23)

I had the same idea as you. I wanted to make a combo set where I didn't have to mess with the lofts to get a good transition between cavity back and blade.

I ended up going with the Tourstage MR-23 US Spec blades and CB's. I should have them in play next week when I head down to Florida if another hurricane doesn't hit my area again since my home course just re-opened last Monday after Charlie closed it down.

I've played both before as a set by themselves. I think the blades are just as forgiving as the CB's and it would be nice to fall back on either set, cb's if I'm in a rut, or blades if I'm hitting it sweet. I have always hit irons well, my problem is getting off the tee consistently and making those 5 footers.

I played the MR 23 blades before and find them not so much less forgiving than the MR23 US CB... Both are the finest irons that I ever had.

I´d be happy to play either ones in the short irons, as long as I can find some easier to hit longer irons.

My game is the complete opposite of yours: I hit my drives and my woods like a 1-capper, putt like a 1-capper and hit my irons like a 18-capper :surprize:

E.g. My drives average around (honest) 270 to 280 with some occasional 300+ bombs, my SS07 carries easily 230 off the deck, but I need a 7 iron most of the times for 150 meters (160 yards) :wah:

My hcp index has been between 5.5 and 6.5 for the last two years, and I think that once I can improve my iron game, I can get down to a 3 or 4 quite fast.

I used a Miura CB201 5 and 6 for a while to go along with my Miura Blades the forgivness is outstanding in the CBs. I am selling them and going with two sets Miura blades and full CBs

I have the 5 and 6 in the BST.

I was going to suggest the Miura CB-201/Blade combo, but I just don't think they will be as forgiving as you may need. Have you looked into the Scratch irons? They are definitely high end quality and I think the combo CB/Tour Blade is very forgiving. They have minimal offset and thin topline, but are slightly longer heel to toe for added forgiveness. Plus you can have the soles ground however you like.

I was one of the very first Scratch customers I believe, and the wedges were indeed nice. They are softer than anything you can imagine (in golf clubs.... :smile1: ) which has also one negative effect: durability. My wedges looked very bad after a short while. But the brand is certainly the ultimate option, if nothing else seems to work.

I definitely suggest some Mizuno Custom M stamps,

3-4 MP27

5-7 MP30

8-PW MP33

Thats always a nice setup, when ordering custom have them all spec'd to your desired lofts, lie angles and shaft lengths.

The 32's were decent, IMO the 33's always have been some of the best made. a 27/32/33 set would be interesting, maybe a little funky looks wise. Ask Breal, he has a custom set of mizzy combo's that he loves, maybe he can give some insight when he gets back from his surf adventure, that way you can see if he would have done things in a different setup.

I think there was a post wit some pics of a custom Mizuno combo...but I can´t find it. Any idea?

Can anyone post some pics of the MP32? How is the size of the PW and 9 iron compared to the other MPs (33, 37, 30)? Mizuno seems to make some large short irons compared to the mid and long irons... but coming from MR23s, everything looks large... :smile1:

I hit the proto MB's they are the most forgiving blade since the MP33 IMO.

Almost no need for the CB in the set. They are part of that whole new forgiving blade movement. Gauge Japan Does have a new 2005 Cb set coming that has the same profile as the blade so it will mesh well as a combo set. Total they have 3-4 different designs of Irons coming, one is very X-16ish, the other sorta remind me of the MR-23 but bigger, then the MB's.

Here are some mizuno custom M stamp examples. There are other variations of these as well, you can move the location of the stamping or change the paintfill:

Combo of 27,30 and 33 would be the best look IMO. No question on Mizuno feel! Especially on satin nickel finish. YUMMY! :smile2:

I have been playing a MR-23 combo set for almost 18 months with a few breaks of 2-3 weeks. With a softer shaft in the CBs, that's all the forgiveness I need to get the ball more airborne on the long irons. That's really where the difference comes in between MR-23 MB/CB, they are both very similar in size and setup but the CB offers a higher trajectory. Sticking with one set of irons for a year has really helped improve the iron game, I am hitting my irons better than ever.

While the MR-23s certainly are not the most foriving iron around, I cannot score any better with Callaways. It's a comfort issue. Put a larger iron in my hand and I am all over the face. If I get sloppy with the MR-23s, then I do switch to a larger CB just to take a break, and then I go back to hitting MR-23s better than before.

One thing I have learned over the years of club ho'g is that the shaft is the key. You can make the most fogiving irons out there a mess with the wrong shaft and you can learn to hit butter knife blades with the right shaft.

Still the repeatable tee shot with the Driver eludes me. It's costing me at least 5 strokes a round, and on some days more.

if u are looking to buy, macgregor 1025CM irons are great cuz they are super soft and pretty easy to hit

They are MP-27s and an a PW in MP33.

The Gauges are only from Gauge Japan, release should be in January.

So a combo set with 27 - 32 - 33 (or 37) would look a bit strange because of the different finish (stock) of the MP32?

How about MP32 - MP27 with a satin finish on all clubs? Do you think that the transition would look ok then?

How much would a combo like that cost and how long would it take?

I just had a set of Miura CB201's 3-6 and Miura Blade 7-PW built witTru TemperTtour Concept's in them. Quite a nice combo set indeed, if I do say so myself...... :cool:

My vote definatley is go Mizuno, all there irons are great and you can make the greatest combo's ever. IMO :mizuno:

Any pics of the what the 30s look like in custom satin? I think a 27-30-33 combo would be awesome. I've hit two of the three and thought they were pretty good (30-33). Haven't hit the 32s yet.
