I work at Desert Mountian in Scottsdale Arizona. Phil came down and played at my course 2 days ago. Pulled up in a Sweet Range Rover. Anyway I do not know if what he actually plays has been posted.

HIS IRONS:

The are a cavity back that looks much like the x 16 pro series but they are not. They are call X Tours. The cavity back is smaller and it has a red, silver and black paint scheme.

HIS DRIVER:

Is a fusion. It kind of looks like a GBBII but it is not. It has that same callaway mark on the back of the club that the GBBII does, but it is black and not blue, It is 410 cc and he says that is much more solid that the retail or tour fusion. He also told me that they have a 460 cc in the works that he is really excited about. They are currenlty building one for him right now. The headcover was black grey and orange it was tight.

HIS BALL:

It is not going to be the fusion ball or anything like that he told me there are a few names out there but they one they are currenlty leaning towars this the TOUR XX. Phil said the new ball allows for more trajectory control more durable with less spin off the driver and more spin off the wedges. Some new core and cover.

HIS PUTTER:

It was a new proto bentinarrdi very thin flange all gold. I did not get a long look at it he is protective of his putter he apparetly loves this one.

wedges are just the tour callies

No pics he wouldn't let me, but there you go

Thanks for the good info, but really IMO hope the equipment changes are not the kiss of death for him he was playing so solid then he makes a change for cash. Hope he doesn't have a bad year for 2005. Good luck Lefty.

curious what everyone thinks here:

ok, when tiger made the switch to nike irons, wedges woods, he kept on using his scotty cameron putter, and titleist 3-wood bc it worked so well for him. dont u think phil should keep using what worked for him in o4. like his putter, he was using it so well, think he should change everything bc hes callaway now and not use any titleist even though it worked so well.

Honestly I would bet he doesn't have a choice. Tiger if he wanted to right now could go and start playing any companies stuff he wanted, and his deal with Nike wouldn't be voided. With the amount Phil signed for and the boost Callaway is hoping that provides, they almost have to force him to play nothing but Callaway owned products.

That said, I'm one of the people who thinks the putter doesn't really matter that much for him. He's used a Bettinardi in the past, he won with both a Futura and a Napa this year, he's used Del Mar's and Santa Fe's and that Yonex blade before. At his level it doesn't particularly matter who make it, he's pretty much just telling Bettinardi exactly what he wants and getting it, the same way he did with Scotty.

well tiger did the same thing, wouldnt make the switch until his equipment was the way he wanted. so i bet phils stuff will be the same, will want it the way he wants and prolly the exact same specs as the titleist stuff he used.

Got this from a insider at titleist that phil signed with callaway due to financial reasons. he said it should leak out sometime soon. i have heard in the past he likes to gamble. but i dont know. i think he could play with a broom stick and still win.

Dude: You seem to indicate that Phils has a gambling problem. You were right in saying it was financial reasons. Cally paid a lot more to Phil and Titleist really missed the boat. They wouldn't come up with the dough. That's it. :smile1:

Exactly......and in this case, the "financial reasons" were not meant to be Phil's problem but rathers Callaway's problem. Believe it or not, the company, with it's recent run of failures, is not in the greatest financial position. Phil may be the shot in the arm they need.

gambling problems? wow, that seems odd, but its all about money, whoever pays the most will get the person. same way in any sport, nhl, football, basketball. who ever is willing to fork over the most money will get the athlete. dont think phil had a gambling, titleist just wasn;t willing to pay that much,. why would they, they have great players already with ernie, scott, etc.

To even remotely suggest that it is related to gambling is ridiculous, unless you have very reputable sources of information. I can not deny that he has enjoyed gambling, but everything I have ever heard he does it at reasonable levels compared to his income. He won big money on either the Ravens or Patriots winning the Super Bowl a couple of years back. But enjoying gambling is a far cry from needing money because of it. He has never denied that he likes to gamble though I do vaguely remember him saying something about not gambling as much on or off the course as being a big reason he had a good year.

Phil wanted more money after winning the Masters while Titleist said they were not interested in renogiating at the time. Phil's contract ran through 2005 and it was clear to Titleist the numbers on what Phil wanted did not line up with their plans. If you think about it Titleist has never paid any of their stars huge money, Tiger left, Duval, and so on. When a star becomes a mega star and wants the big bucks Titleist let's them go instead of paying that kind of money.

Well if you gentelmen would like to know the truth about phils gambling here it is. One of the members at DM is in a partner in a casino I over heard talking about this when phil was there. According to him phil owes somewhere in the realm of 4 to 6 million to vegas. Apparently he likes to bet on horses and dogs.

Sorry all you phil lovers but that is it from a reputable guy. I think he should be okay after this year however, with the 8 mill or whatever he is getting from Cally.

The rumor flying around Vegas after his pullout was he was down like two mil Friday night and was at the tables trying to win some of it back :money:

I also heard from a well placed individual Phil might be in some financial trouble due to gambling losses. Everybody likes to talk about when he won on the Ravens but that years ago. Nobody ever likes to talk about their losses and it's been a while since you heard of any big wins :D

comment_61741

Maybe that's why he won his first major recently, necessity... to bail his ass out of a hole.

I think having all the money he had he'd avoid gambling!

Best place for him to claw such dough back is on the course, two or three wins!

Sounds like he's in big trouble!

Callaway is the IMF of the pro golfing world :smile1:

Yep i have to agree with you there, but the amount was never in doubt, it was a marker that Phil finally decided to pay off. As of july, that marker was paid in full, it was about 6.7 million dollars !
