Well I tried to overhaul my swing this last summer (with my pro) and he's a hank haney fan so it's going that direction. I flattened out my swing plane and played very well all summer, howver in the fall i started falling apart, I recently saw some video and noticed i'm laid off quite a bit at the top. So i'll be working on straightening that out, as well as shortening my swing a hair.

Started tweaking my swing bout four months ago with the start of the rainy season in Asia. Shortened up my swing and fixed first move down. It's taken quite nicely, I have half a dozen rounds in the mid-70's to show for it.

You can read more in the thread called "just had a lesson". Good luck with what you're working on.

Made a trip to for a launch monitor reading with a mini-lesson thrown in. I found out that I was coming outside to in with an open clubface. Also the ball spin on the driver was a bit high so I've got a new shaft with lower torque going in the driver.

The lesson portion had me work on three things.

1. My right leg was getting very straight in the backswing. From the waist up I was in "near perfect" position at the top but the leg was too straight. I've worked on both keeping the flex in the leg and having the weight set on the right foot so I can lift my toe a little when I'm at the top.

2. Set the hands forward a little more at address. My hands were behind the ball on almost all of the clubs at address.

3. When the swing changes take affect, consider a lighter and more flexible shaft.

I've worked hard on the first two and I now get an inside to out swing. I still hit a light fade but the ball starts out at my target and then moves right a bit. I've seen a lot more consistency. I swapped out the Project X shafts I had in my irons and put the DGS300s back in, I'm looking around for a light shaft and might go with the Rifle Air Lite or something similar that is under 100 grams.

Edit: We really don't have an "off season" here in Arizona, just a few hours less daylight and the occasional frost delay so I'm always working on something.

I have been working tirelessy on Balance, tempo, takeaway, and timing.

Over the summer of my 3rd full year of playing the Greatest Game and working with Tour Tempo late in the season, this has by far been my most gratifying season.

Nowhere close to Tiger's level but I know what I want to do with my swing and I am happy with the fact that I can realize it and repeat it.

i probably could have include this in the end of the original post. its a question thts been pondering me awhile. the greenside bunker shot. there two things id like to know what everyone here does.

1. do u open ur shoulders, hips and feet left of ur target then open ur face so the club is aligned with the target and then swing along the line of ur feet/shoulder/hips?

or

2. do u open ur shoulders, hips and feet left of ur target and open the face to the target and then swing ur club along the target line?

which method is proper. both situations using a 56* wedge.

Don't know which is proper but I'm more likely to go with the second method. The first thing I do is usually set up square to the target, then I open the club face to try and control how high I need the ball to go. Next, I open my stance to get the club face on the target line. I then decide how big of a swing I need to take to get the ball to my target. I use a very wristy swing for my bunker shots and my first move is usually to cock the wrists.

  • 2 weeks later...

For bunker shots I open my stance and aim left and then lay the club open slightly right of the target. From their its just a smooth swing along my shoulder line, not getting wristy with the shot. The mian thing to worry about is staying down long enough and following through all the way.

Anyone know a good method for picking the ball clean from a fairway bunker? Those have been giving me hell lately.

From the fairway bunker the idea is to strike the ball first. Some things you can do to promote that is to:

1 Set up with the ball slightly back in your stance...

2 Take more club (approx one more for the normal yardage)...

3 Dig your feet in about an inch or so to help create a more stable base, choke down on the club to accomodate the digging in...

4 Pick a spot on the front of the ball and focus on that spot...

5 Easy swing

Most importantly--Always take enough loft to clear the lip of the bunker

Good luck

The best way to do it is quite your lower body. Take a bit wider stance and "push" your knees outward laterally at address.

As far as my swing changes, I've been trying to get my swing back on plane. To do this I've concentrated on keeping my right elbow close to my body, and not letting it get away from me at the top of the backswing.

There are two ways to play fairway bunkers. A. Pick it clean. B. Ball first then sand. I prefer to make sure I hit the ball first then don't worry about taking a "divot" I just club up a bit more. I find it more consistant than just "picking" it. However both are effective.

My problem with hitting the ball first is that I'll come in way to steep on the ball and I'll only hit one out of maybe 10 shots solid.

At the top or your back swing if you attempt to level your shoulders off a little bit more and do not dive at the ball, it will allow you to take the right amount of grass.

Hank Hanaey had a great tip on this using a model of Vijay.
